Yeah, we decided not to stay in Los Angeles after all. Our base will now be Newport Beach, but we will be driving to LA, San Francisco, and San Diego.

Hope you have a wonderful time! I grew up in Newport Beach and I love it there. Fashion Island (Barnes & Noble Bookstore) is great and then there is the Villa Nova on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) and the Arches across the street is a local favorite. If you are going to San Diego, you have to visit Old Town especially for Mexican Food and then there is the Gas Light district which has incredible Jazz bars. L.A. is way too big to name all of the “must sees”, but Hollywood Boulevard has changed dramatically and is quite a scene now – in a cleaner more sanitized way. I think you will be too late for a baseball game at Dodger Stadium but they are fun if you aren’t. Also, as long as you are driving if you get the chance and you have the time, Santa Barbara is really pretty this time of year. The Fun Zone in Newport has been bought so if you get a chance you might want to stop there – it is on the Penninsula and you can actually take the Ferry from Balboa Island over or the reverse. Balboa Island, the Ferry and the Fun Zone are some “old stand-bys” at least for us. Oh, my cousin swears by the Pizza at BJs in Balboa and Ruby’s Diner on the Balboa Pier is fun.

    Have a wonderful vacation.

You’re coming to LA! I hope you have a great time. If you want a few fun stops that are a leetle off the standard tourist circuit try the following:

If you go down to Hollywood Blvd. head into the Fredrick’s of Hollywood and check out the Bra Museum in the back. Bras, girdles and underpants of the stars from the golden era of Hollywood & beyond!

The Museum of Jurassic Technology out in West LA is a small collection of curiosities that challenges the modern definition of the word museum.

The Venice Beach Canals are a quaint little monument to the grandiose dreams of real-estate developers over the years (Venice on the Pacific! Good idea, bad drainage. Wait a hundred years, and it’ll be worth millions!)

If you go to Santa Monica Pier (everyone does) try to ride the Ferris Wheel – there’s a great view from the top. Also, please note that the nearby mall – Santa Monica Place – was designed by the Frank Gehry. Yes, I know it’s crap that Gehry basically shat out to pay his student loans or something, but none of that matters now that he’s famous – which, if you think about it, is really West LA in a nutshell.

Karen, you should have great weather. Newport Beach is a great place. Are you going to do the audio posts?

Hi K. Hope you have a great time. Get a splash from Shamu for me when you go to Sea World!

Head a little south to Laguna and enjoy the beach [many tiny coves found right off at each right you make off PCH], best burgers are at Husky Boys, walk downtown then have a nibble over at the Beglium Cafe then walk some more – its gorgeous right now. Coffee pubs in the morning are very popular if you want to do some people watching.

Disneyland is much better than Disney World, can’t beat the original. I swear Its a Small World has the same shag carpet from 35 years ago.

But my best advice, take the coast route up to San Francisco…Santa Barbara, Half Moon Bay, Cambria [Hearst Castle is amazing and there is a hotel that rents little houses on the beach cheap!]. Once up in SF, take a day and drive over to Sonoma [about 2 hours] for the wine tasting in the vineyards [there are some great small small places that are fabulous], bypass Napa.

What am I doing, I’m sure you’ve bought a tour guide and have it all figured out…enjoy and I can’t wait to hear about your trip…and who knows, we may even cross paths πŸ™‚

You’re going to have so much fun! Newport Beach is a gorgeous place. A drive along the coast is a must. I agree with Tilly. Go up to Hearst Castle in San Simeon, Cambria, and swing by Solvang. Always beautiful. Make sure you take lots of pictures!

If you have any extra time when you come up to LA, let me know. I’d love to meet you live and in person!
