Call me old fashioned, but unless things are really and I mean REALLY horrible, how can you split up after twenty years together?

I certainly don’t know if any of these are the case with any of these celebrity marriages, but among the people I know who divorced after twenty years of marriage, the causes were things like infidelity, alcoholism, gambling addiction, or verbal and physical abuse. Not “dry spells” or “rough patches” but really bad shit.

Remember that a lot of people who get divorced after being married twenty-plus years were sticking out really toxic marriages “for the sake of the children.” Again, I don’t know if this is at all relevant to any of these celebrity marriages, but I think dismissing all of the people who divorce after decades of marriage as silly or frivolous is pretty short-sighted.

Did you not think that eventually there’d be a dry spell, a boring time in the relationship? Didn’t you expect you’d have to pass through that to get to the golden years at the end? Didn’t your mama warn you it wouldn’t be all lollipops and sunshine but you should stick it out?

The couples that split after a few years I get, but to put 20 years into a relationship then give up…I don’t get it. Unless one half of the equation is being a total dickwad having some kind of mid life crisis dealie.

We know Gretchen Bonaduce (Bob’s in a band with her), so that one came as no surprise to me. She has really done her damnedest to make that as normal a household as possible, even given the way the marriage started out.

Personally, I prefer to focus on the relationships that are still going strong after many years. Like John Barrowman and his partner, Scott (16 years), Stephen Spielberg and Kate Capshaw (17 going on 18 years), and Mel Gibson and Robyn Moore (28 years), but one thing you’ll notice in long lived “Hollywood” relationships is that more often then not, the partner is not in the business or leaves the business after the start of the relationship. That more than likely gives the couple somethng to focus on other than “fame” and “stardom”… but, call me old-fashioned, I like to think that marriage should be more than a publicity game that so many relationships have become in the entertainment industry.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Robin Williams leave his first wife to be with the family baby sitter? If Masha is the baby sitter, why am I surprised they’ve been together this long?

But Morgan Freeman? Dam! He’s like that kindly, wise uncle you’d think would have a rock solid marriage. What a shame, but I guess divorce always is a sad event.
