Isn’t it funny how couples in a lot of romance books can have full blown sex in an elevator, without A) Getting caught, and B) nobody else calling for the lift?

I can’t remember the last elevator ride that I experienced that A) lasted longer than 20 seconds, and B) didn’t have a stranger join me in the lift.

Just sayin’.

  • You have to also consider that there’s cameras in a lot of elevators, which I think about. Not when I’m screwing, just in general. I also think about it every time I go into a dressing room and look at the mirror.

Only one of the MANY reasons I rarely read a contemp (elevator scenes are quite common). I am not that good at suspending disbelief in contemporary set romances. Too many “yeah right” moments.

  • I too wonder about this same thing. It takes less than a minute to get to whatever floor you need to get to. How can you get off in less than a minute?

I don’t read many contemporaries, so I haven’t come across that exact situation. The only sex-in-elevator scenes I’ve read involved elevators that were conveniently stuck, so those scenes worked for me. Is sex in non-broken elevators really that common in contemps?

Every time I read a “yeah right” moment, I always hope that the couple gets caught. Written right it would be a great comedic scene.

  • That’s one of my pet peeves! Not just elevators, but sex in places where one would be likely to get caught but doesn’t. I really like the phrase “yeah right moments” that the commenter above me used!

Also, I recently received my first blog award and I chose you to pass it on to!

  • I’ll admit it – I wrote one of those elevator books – they were trapped. Yeah, it’s doubtful it could ever happen but then what the hell…its romance and it rarely makes sense anyway.

    That’s certainly not a fantasy *I* maintain 😉

With the high probability of having a camera in there, I’d wonder if the couple cares or enjoys the idea of being watched. Doesn’t that go through their heads? I can imagine them doing it and a voice coming over the speaker, “Um, could you shift a little to the left, dude?”

Really? I read contemporary primarily and I can count on one hand the elevator sex scenes I’ve come across – one, and the elevator was out of action due to a power cut and they got caught just before he was able to do the deed with her, he’d already worked his magic with his hands as it were though. Are you talking about erotic romance? I suppose they might be more common there but I haven’t come across one. Obviously you’re reading way more contemporary romance than me.

  • I just finished writing an elevator sex scene. It’s a TALL building (tallest in the city) and the elevator is key operated. The man shuts it off and when the woman doesn’t beat him senseless, takes that for consent. (for her, it is)

Hey, Karen, I think you have it there. Elevator scenes are just dressed up quickies, LOL. I agree, I can’t remember the last time I was in an elevator where the ride lasted more than a minute *and* I was alone with my companion.
