I'm with Karen, I was scared to read this one, then found myself loving it. Especially toward the end, when Anya has a SERIOUSLY bad day in the kitchen. You just hurt for her and all the "it's for your own good" stuff that Del Rey does to her (at least he's smart enough to admit he's a moron for not considering the consequences of his actions). The back half is where it really picks up speed.

I'm debating when I'll pick up Cabal's. (Sadly, not an if, but a when.)

Also the increasingly transparent plots and the deteriorating quality of the writing. I think she’s over contracted or something. Don’t want her to go the way of LKH, who used to be a guilty pleasure.

You nailed it, I think she is stretching herself thin with all of these different series.

I did read Coyote's Mate, and although the book was fast paced it also felt kinda repetitive, and frankly, I wanted to beat Del Rey's brains in with a brick. Was definitely not one I'd reread, and not how I'd expected their story to play out, given the bits of it that we saw in other books.

The Breed books really frustrate me tbh, and it's impacted my enjoyment of them to the point where I was in no hurry to read the last few, despite having liked the characters when originally introduced.
Her research is a more than a little bit pants which I could live with if they'd stayed lighthearted and campy, but the terrible science is really bothering me now. Also the increasingly transparent plots and the deteriorating quality of the writing. I think she's over contracted or something. Don't want her to go the way of LKH, who used to be a guilty pleasure.

It's depressing, because she has a real knack for putting you deep into the characters pov and writing dense, angsty scenes and powerfully charged dialogue.
So near and yet so far. Drives me crazy.

Great review. I love the Breed series, but this was my least favorite. It's been awhile since I read it, but I think it's because these two seemed to have had too much of a big mis and spent too much time apart.

I have Cabal's book in my TBR and I can't wait to read it!

I loved her Breed Books when they first came out, but she is turning into Diana Palmer in which the plot lines are unbelievable, the Hero unlikable and the Heroine just plain doormats, BUT I STILL BUY D.PALMERS BOOKS, so yeah I get the "I can't quit you" statement.

I'm with you on "quitting" Leigh. I feel the need to keep giving her books a try, even though I can't really say that I like her writing. I feel like I'm reading something written by a very talented 10 year old--needs a lot of work, but the potential is there and you can tell that she's going to be amazing one day (er, and there's a whole lot of sex that I would hope a 10 year old wouldn't know to write about, heh).

The thing with each and every one of her books that I've read (2 of the SEALS and 4 or 5 of the Breeds) is that several times in each I think, sometimes aloud, "What the fuck is she talking about?" The dialogue often doesn't match what she's telling us. One of the characters will say something, then we get all this mental angst from the other, and I'm like, "BUT HE DIDN'T SAY THAT!"

But still, there's just something about these books. I'll probably read Coyote's Mate now. I had zero interest in it, but I love the idea of a mate deciding to separate.

I still have to read this one. I really like the Breeds series but have an inexplicable something against the Wolf Breed books (with the exception of Elizabeth's Wolf and Aiden's Charity). So I've had Coyote's Mate on the shelf since release but am very reluctant to start. Your review might have been the little push I needed though!
