Got this earlier via another blog post on here:

Hi Ms. Karen,

I couldn’t find another place to contact you, so forgive me if this isn’t the correct way.

The owner of Red Rose Publishing, Wendi Felter has breached my contract and continues to have my books up on the Red Rose website. Per the contract, the required 90 days were over as of March 27, 2011 and all my contract has been through email and certified mail.

I wanted the readers out there to know that if you buy any of my titles at Red Rose Publishing, that the publisher is in breach of my author rights. She has no right to sell my books.

Thank you, Ms. Karen for letting me get my message out. I’ve posted a notice on my Facebook page and am about to post on my blog.

You are more than welcome to contact me should you have any questions.

All the best,
Tambra Kendall

Any comments Wendi?

I know several others who are going through the same thing. She doesn’t answer emails or certified letters – in fact, I’ve heard she’s ignoring them altogether and doesn’t sign for them. She hasn’t paid authors, editor or cover artists and had decided if they are no longer working there, they aren’t getting paid. The fact they had a contract and did the work and only get paid as the book sells doesn’t matter to her. I strongly advice authors not to submit to Red Rose

  • Hi Michelle,
I’m also one of the editors she decided to quit paying last year.

The RRP situation? Not so funny.

  • Hi Shiloh,

The situation is crappy but I took my rights back. I’m prepared to take her to court. Wendi Felter has had plenty of time to remove my books (over 90 days now.)

    The cartoon is funny. :)
    Thanks for the support.

I’m another person she’s cheated, both as an independent contractor and as an author. She offers diamond bracelets in response to our demand to be paid what she owes us, and does not respond to our inquiries or requests for payment. Authors, editors, cover artists, please, stay away from Red Rose Publishing. Readers, there are great authors there whose books Wendi is stealing by refusing to pay honestly.

  • Tambra – good on you for speaking up and not being scared. I admire that.

Wendi – get your finger out and do the right thing by these authors.

  • Chiming in as another author who Red Rose Publishing still owes royalty payments. It’s been more than 200 days since the certified letter was delivered to RRP terminating the contracts while the contracts only require 90 days. Still Ms. Felter refuses to respond to emails, phone calls, and letters from me, my attorney, and RWA representatives. Fortunately, she has removed my books from her website and third-party sites but I’d really like to get the royalties I’ve earned and a letter from the publisher stating the publishing rights have reverted in case I decide I want to publish them elsewhere.

COME ON, MS. FELTER! DO THE RIGHT THING!

  • Hi K.S.,
I would love a letter stating return of my rights. From what I’ve seen of Ms. Felter’s behavior I’d be extremely surprised if I received one.

Hopefully this will help spread even more awareness about Wendi Felter’s bad behavior. I feel that as long as she’s got naive authors willing to trust her, she will continue acting exactly as she’s done.

I’m another dissatisfied RRP author. My cover artists and editors have not been paid in well over two years, despite their contracts providing for payment in the form of royalties for the life of the book’s contract. Recently, Felter announced she would no longer pay cover artists and editors who are not actively working for Red Rose (which she hasn’t been doing anyway). That’s how it works at some publishers – Samhain for one – but Samhain’s contract STATES that; Red Rose’s doesn’t.

Felter holds books hostage, publishes books without contracts, withholds royalties, ignores emails. She refuses to return one author’s rights because she claims that author was overpaid by less than $0.30. When the author contacted Felter to ask how she could send Red Rose the thirty damn cents…no response.

And people continue submitting to this “publisher” after all the warnings posted online over the past 2 years? Frankly, at this point (and I am not talking about those that are currently caught on this nightmare) anyone currently submitting there gets what they deserve. Sorry, but as a a reader, in this day and age where pretty much everyone has access to the internet and knows what Google is, I find this mind-boggling.

I agree, Mireya. But I fear that for a lot of us, the only way we will be free of her is if she closes her doors – and as long as she’s got new fodder coming in, that won’t happen.

You’re right, though, if an author is foolish enough to sign with her at this point, well…they get no sympathy from me.

Red Rose Publishing has hit the trifecta when it comes to bad business practices. There are many blogs and other lists all over the web that detail this publishing company’s unprofessionalism and criminal behavior. Just some of the examples are: not releasing rights back to authors when the owner has sent certified letters of termination like is described in her contract, posing as law enforcement/federal agents or retired members of the police or federal criminal services, bulling, extortion, misappropriation of funds, and the list goes on and on.

There are many that have asked for their rights to be reverted back, but Wendi Felter, owner of Red Rose Publishing, has told authors that she has the choice to comply with the termination letters or to ignore them as she pleases. She has also ignored lawsuits and judements against her. Her NDA clause in her contracts are only for the authors, but she tells them that she has the right to broadcast any and all information about her authors anywhere she pleases. She lies constantly about her social network and what she will do for her authors. She has refused to pay editors and cover artists after they leave her company even though she owes them royalties on books they have worked on. She refuses to pay some authors royalties, because she doesn’t feel like paying them at that time. She also has been known to cuss out and abuse her author pool as a hole through many erratic posts on blogs and other mediums.

I believe it is against the law in most if not all states to impersonate, and I am pretty sure it’s against Federal laws as well: http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/usc_sec_18_00000912—-000-.html

Document EVERYTHING ladies. If she’s doing all sorts of illegal things, including impersonating, you need everything nicely organized and documented.

The sad thing is…it’s really hard to fight these type of pubs.

People have been rallying against Publish America for years, to no avail. But they continue on in the hopes of guiding others to “the light” before being caught up in the nastiness. Then comforting them once they do. (Check out Absolute Write.)

The trouble lies in the fact these are small fish in a huge ocean. Think on it, not only are authorities swamped with info from disgruntled authors, but also from people dealing with every number of business imaginable. That’s a huge spector of complaints to deal with.

Plus, the wording in some contracts can leave open a lot of room for interpretation. What the unversed think of as cut and dry is simply not true in legal dealings. People see what they want to see. This does not label them stupid, just up against all the nuances of verbiage that says nothing while seeming to promise everything.

This is why the only recourse I can see that has any effect at all is to continually put the cards on the table when it comes to disreputable publishers. “Mean girls” label? So be it. If the continued voicing of discontent means even one author/editor/cover artist is spared, then, to me, it is worth it.

Just weighing in, another former RRP author officially screwed over outright & extremely pissed off!

Being a non-confrontational person by nature, seeing the RRP implosion unfold over the years, knowing full well I’ve sold more books than any of the ficticious and fabricated statements indicate, (there are ways to track sales lady!)I haven’t seen a dime, and frankly never expect to! Keeping a low profile and staying out of every RRP related matter, apparently doesn’t do a bit of good.

But as of late, Ms. Felter has further resorted to harrassing and berating authors close to the ends of the contracts, knowing they are doing very VERY well with other epubs, demanding said authors submit more books, or else!

Furthering her tyrant, she resorts to include twice removed cover artists, editors & other authors who have nothing to do with the matter in her pool of lies and deceit, creating the most negative and unprofessional business I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. There is a name for these unorthodox tactics, it’s called Group bullying, cyber bullying, extortion…shall I go on?

Well sweet cheeks, you have officially pushed the wrong quiet person beyond the point of return. I’m not going down without a fight, and I have amo to boot! Gloves are off now!

What gets my goat, is how, legally this kind of criminal harrassment and theft continues and can’t be stopped by legal channels despite dozens, if not hundreds of complaintants, law suits, audits and lawyers involved? Really?

I have seen other authors declare their rights revoked, stating they fully own their property rights on blogs and websites publically, is this legal if certified letters are ignored or disregarded? Looking for options at this point.

I’ve just sent my certified letter. Two months ago I filed a complaint with the New York Attorney General’s office…fraud. The form is easy to download so the more of us doing that the better.

Also, we should all contact the internet provider.

  • The problem is that Amazon is selling our books. If we could get Amazon to stop selling them, we would be cheated less.
Tired of seeing sales on Author Central for which I’m not compensated, I recently sent an email to Amazon, but no response.

I don’t know what their policy is but it seems to me that authors ought to be able to take down products fraudulently sold on the site.

6/17/14 I have not received a royalty payment since the 3rd quarter of 2013, nor have I received statements, so I don’t even know how much Ms. Felter owes me. I do know my books are still up on the site and at the third party sellers. She continues to make money off the sale of my books. She’s no better than a common criminal. Does anyone know, if she does not respond to our letter requesting our rights back, do the rights automatically return to the author? But then how does one get payment directly from the third party sites?
