I’m sat here with tears running down my face. I’m actually grieving as if I’ve just lost a loved one. And in a way, I guess I have.

I’d fallen asleep last night, and TTG had to wake me up to tell me the news that Whitney had died. I didn’t believe him at first, after all, Whitney Houston is a legend, and legends like her don’t die. Then I remembered. Yes, they do.

As with Michael Jackson, Whitney’s music has always had the power to take me back to a specific time and place.

Saving All My Love For You reminds me of being in school and having a massive crush on a boy. It was played at our school disco and I remember feeling heartbroken because The Object of My Affection danced with somebody else to that song.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody was the first song that prompted me to dance round my house, hairbrush or whatever in hand, pretending to be Whitney. That song was just so joyous.

It’s Not Right, But It’s OK, reminds me of going out with my BFFs and going crazy when it came on. It was such a great feminist anthem to us.

And this one just reminds me how utterly fantastic some of her less well known songs were:

When I think about my favourite Whitney song, there’s actually too many to name, but My Love Is Your Love really means a lot to me. I wont go into the whys and wherefores, but the lyrics are beautiful.

If tomorrow is judgment day (Sing Mommy)
And I’m standing on the front line
And the Lord asks me what I did with my life
I will say I spent it with you

If I wake up in World War III
I see destruction and poverty
And I feel like I want to go home
It’s okay if you’re coming with me

‘Cause your love is my love
And my love is your love
It would take an eternity to break us
And the chains of Amistad couln’t hold us
‘Cause your love is my love
And my love is your love
It would take an eternity to break us
And the chains of Amistad couln’t hold us

If I lose my fame and fortune
And I’m homeless on the street
And I’m sleeping in Grand Central Station
It’s okay if you’re sleeping with me

As the years they pass us by
We stay young through each other’s eyes
And no matter how old we get
It’s okay as long as I got you baby

‘Cause your love is my love
And my love is your love
It would take an eternity to break us
And the chains of Amistad couln’t hold us
‘Cause your love is my love
And my love is your love
It would take an eternity to break us
And the chains of Amistad couln’t hold us

If I should die this very day
Don’t cry, ’cause on Earth we weren’t meant to stay
And no matter what the people say
I’ll be waiting for you after the judgment day

‘Cause your love is my love
And my love is your love
It would take an eternity to break us
And the chains of Amistad couln’t hold us
‘Cause your love is my love
And my love is your love
It would take an eternity to break us
And the chains of Amistad couln’t hold us

Just beautiful.

I can only hope that Whitney’s death serves to remind some of my favourite talented stars that drugs and alcohol is a one-way ticket to hell.

My thoughts go out to her family, who now have to learn to live without her in their lives.

Rest in peace Whitney, I love what you brought to me, I loved your voice, I loved your music, I loved your talent, and even though you and I have never met, I feel the loss of you as keenly as I would anybody in my family. You may be gone, but you’ll never be forgotten.
