Seriously?

Sorry I haven’t blogged in a while, but life tends to get in the way a bit.

Anyway, I’m interrupting my unintentional blogging hiatus to share my incredulity at the following:

Firstly, I’m reading a Lena Matthews book, where one of the secondary characters is called MeShell. Seriously? (Does the fact that she’s a drag queen make a difference?)

Secondly, what the fuck is going on with that crazy fuckwit over at StopGRBullies? Outing Goodreads reviewers, whilst pretending she’s the seeker of truth and justice? Say whaat? She seems to think that she’s sticking it to the mean girls, but as with that Cindy Whatsherface from a few years ago who wanted to teach us mean girls a lesson, she seems to be under the illusion that what she’s doing is for the good of the Goodreads community. Somehow, she’s failed to grasp that what she’s doing is soooo much worse than readers leaving negative or slice and dice reviews. Here at KKB, we understand that the bint over at StopGRBullies is the real bully in this tale. A cowardly one at that. Doctor heal thyself much?

Here’s a post from from one of her victims.

Seriously?

UPDATED TO ADD:

For a rather beautifully articulated OP on the above, head on over to Dear Author, but for Oprah’s sake, watch out for the batshit loony wankers defecating all over the comments section.

Seriously, hasn’t she got anything else to do with her time? What a waste of space.

  • They have no lives. It’s kind of pitiful, really.

  • The site shows such a degree of WTFery that I still haven’t gotten over it, and I am not even a party involved. Just when I thought I had seen everything online (this geezer has been on the interwebs since 1995) this one takes the cake … and shoots it to the stratosphere… I just wish it would be sucked by a wormhole or something.

  • If you follow the discussion over at Dear Author, you would be appalled at the number of people who actually think it’s okay to post real life personal information on the reviewers/readers, “because they are mean” or “because they provoked it” by being mean.

People there–and elsewhere, follow the link to Passive Guy’s post and comments–are equating endangering the reviewers with how the poor authors got their feelings hurt.

    Amazing.

  • I read most of the comments, and I can’t say that I’m surprised by the people making excuses for that rabid site. That Melody whatsherface was totally on one.

I believe rule number one for a writer is develop a thick skin as not everyone is going to like what you write so get over it.

  • What is really frying my grits is having so many people ignore the blatant misogyny displayed here.

Take that NM person as an example. “Let’s be polite, this wouldn’t happen if we used good manners.”

    Bullshit.

Let’s be polite for these assholes means, “keep the women quiet.”

Holy crap! I swear to God I now understand why Ridley sometimes posts in such a snarky voice. I want to go over there and whack some people in the head with a 2 by 4.

WTFery like this will never end. There are some seriously disturbed people lurking out there on the net and they take great pleasure in this sort of shite. Gives them thier “fifteen minutes of fame”, I guess.

I still think one of the most evil things you can do is post someone’s private details for the world to see. All because you have a beef with them, imagined or not.

Wait, maybe I should qualify that last paragraph. Child molesters, murderers, rapists, arsonists, people who steal every last dime of others savings through trickery, etc. Yeah. Those are worthy of public scrutiny.

But a person who did a book review? REALLY?

  • You ain’t seen nothing, sister.

    Will you look at this?

Those bitches have some nerve, let me tell you.

    As I said over there,

And I thought neither of you could stoop any lower.

    Live to learn.

Then again, you act with impunity, as cowardly as the StGRb, because you know that none of the people behind Dear Author will expose you to real life stalking by outing you.

    Unmitigated hypocrites.

Yeah, it’s craziness at its best. I did have to comment that I def trust DA with my identity no matter how many times I may adamantly disagree there.

I feel the same way here.

I just read all of that at DA. Good gravy, there are some insanely evil people out there with a lot of time on their hands. I cannot believe how many people think it’s perfectly okay to stalk someone for the specific purpose of amalgamating all of the information online with an incitement for random strangers to go do them wrong.

I would love a list of the authors responsible for this, so I can buy and post my detailed reviews of their books on GR and amazon. I’m sure they would see that as a perfectly legitimate response to this situation and not at all stalkerish. We could get all Church Lady about it and hold a nice wholesome reading bee where we all do the same!

The whole idea and execution of the site is very scary. A lot of the “evidence” seems highly suspicious and not very convincing. There is a letter from a 14-year old that is so well written (including vocabulary that 14-year olds typically do not use) that I don’t believe it for a minute. I have a 15-year old who is very bright, and I wouldn’t believe she could write that kind of an essay, let alone stop her tweeting, texting and going out with friends to deliver a college-worthy letter to an author about being offended for cursing. And even if it was true, then get over it! People are allowed to not like your books. If bad reviews bother you so much, then don’t write, find something else to do that does not involve any criticism at all. Where anyone can find that though, I don’t know. Every job I ever had, my performance was judged and evaluated.

The creators of this website (who feed off of each other) need therapy to get over their narcissism.

Good grief! That thread’s going to crack 500 sometime in the next hour. I hope the STGRB girls didn’t arrange to pay NM & Charlie by the post. They’ll be bankrupt by the end of the day …

In my field, we can be reviewed on line by people. We can hire folks to police these comments and take them down.

Or we can do what I do, which is never look at them so I don’t too bent out of shape or too full of myself.

(I have no idea what my reviews say, because I don’t read them.)

I think authors who want writing to be their profession need to take the same approach.

  • I read reviews. It’s hard to miss them as I have a google alert for my name. Not out of vanity or neuroses though I have plenty of both, but for piracy. I have had reviews that make me question hether the reviewer actually read my book, but only in the case of a factual error have I ever said anything to a reviewer and even that was done through email. I’ve been online for a long time in various discussion groups, so I know basic netiquette. Unfortunately I think we have a lot of people who are both new to the net and to the industry and we’re seeing the tragic consequences.

Years ago I was in an online forum that was constantly bombarded by racist trolls. These guys were horrible and constantly posted the type of vileness typically reserved to places like Stormfront. Eventually someone posted personal information about the worst of the trolls. His real name. The name of his business, even his children’s schools. Godawful as this guy was,and he really was loathesome, I thought this went beyond the pale, and said so. Of course, then I was attacked and eventually left that forum.

I say this as someone who has been attacked by trolls numerous times. Who has fallen prey to one star bandits on GR, this is horrible, especially over something so trivial as a goddamned GR review.

@Karen You’re right – the comments in the DA article has completely degenerated from any kind of discussion. Everyone is trying to get the last word in and one-up on the insults. I guess that is why the whole review thing blew up in the first place.
