I agree with what you say about Fraser: I find myself sort of relaxing a few extra degrees when reading her, because her knowledge of the period feels so thorough. Kind of a “you’re in good hands” experience.

I found the beginning of Jack’s and Elizabeth’s marriage just heartbreaking – I can’t think of another historical in which I’ve been so sure the widowed heroine really loved her first husband. Then I felt so awful for Elizabeth, on her own, and for Jack, already struggling with his mother’s decline and suddenly locked into marriage with a stranger, that I desperately wanted to see them work out their problems and find some happiness.

Also: foaling scene, with complications! Hard to go wrong with a book that has one of those.

The second was not quite as good as the first — I believe it was actually her first book, but the second to get published. It’s a prequel to The Sergeant’s Lady, in fact. I’d say this was on par with TSL. Hope you enjoy it.

I thoroughly enjoyed her first book, The Sergeant’s Lady and this sounds just as good. Then I realized her second book, A Marriage of Inconvenience had disappeared deep into the bowels of the TBR electronic pile so I dug it out and now will have two books to read.
