Trawling through blogland, I keep coming across the same authors names over and over, authors whom I regret to say, I’ve never experienced their work before. Whilst I’ve read several books by Emma Holly, I’m ashamed to say, I’ve never read a single Suzanne Brockmann book. Why? Mostly because of the hype. I live in fear of picking up an over-hyped book and hating it with a passion. Mind you, check out the RUBBISH website, you’d think such an esteemed author would have the good sense to make sure her website was fabulous. Sheesh! Some people have no clue.

Jenny Crusie is another author whose books I haven’t read. Her website is a definite improvement on Brockmann’s, I might just try her books first. I hear ‘Bet Me’, is a fab book?

Here’s a list of other romance writer’s whose work I’ve never experienced.

  • Ann Stuart
  • Sherrilyn Kenyon
  • Catherine Coulter
  • Elizabeth Lowell
  • Mary Jo Putney
  • Stella Cameron
  • I can imagine the number of horrified faces out there who probably think I’m some kind of heathen for never having read any of the above authors, oh well, I can rectify that, if any of you would be so kind as to point me in the right direction…

So, which books from the above list of authors, or indeed any other trendy author you can think of, would you recommend I read? Bare in mind, that I hate stupid heroines and assholic (loving that word, it’s so mine) heroes. Oh yeah, no stupid secret baby plots either, no sirree!!

Jennifer Crusie’s books are terrific. (and not because we share the same first name!)

I haven’t read any of the authors you posted, so don’t feel bad. I just have no time to read. I wish I could read more! My TBR pile is huge, but so is my ironing pile. Guess which one is going to get taken care of first?

I’ve only read Suzanne Brockmann from the list you gave Karen, and I can definitely recommend her. I’ve read most of her Harlequin Navy SEAL unit books, starting with Prince Joe.

Oh, her Educating Harvard is the first Harlequin that I read that had a black Hero and Heroine and I really enjoyed it.

And yes, her website is a bit naff, but her writing more than makes up for it.

I’m in shock!!! I know an author of that list!..me, the girl from the island! Elizabeth Lowell it’s one of my forever favorite..If I can pick a name it’s because I like it, because Those names are very hard for me to remember.I had read a few from her and she is sensual and with lots of emotion in her books..My kind of writer.

Shocked! Shocked I say! Wow, Karen! All excellent authors on your list. You’ve never read Sherrilyn Kenyon or Elizabeth Lowell? Holy s*&t! Unbelieveable! Suzanne Brockmann’s books are pretty good. Catherine Coulter’s FBI series is excellent! Anne Stuart’s books are very good… nailbiters. Mary Jo Putney is good also. Do you read Susan Elizabeth Phillips? If not, you better because you are definitely missing out! She’s fabulous. There are a few other honorable mentions such as:
      Linda Lael Miller
      Karen Robards
      Deidre Martin
      Christine Rimmer
      Elaine Fox
      Laurie Paige
      Rita Herron
      Gennita Low

Just a few off the top shelf of my bookshelves. I could go on and on, but I think I wrote enough. Expand your horizons woman! Explore the endless sea of wonderful books that are in your midst! Enjoy!

Part of the problem is so many books and so little time. 😉

Anne, you mentioned on Christine Rimmer on your list.

I love Christine’s work. My favorite of hers is “The Man Behind the Mask.” I’ve also read her Viking Brides series and some of the books in her Bravo family series. She has a long booklist of various series, though.

Paz, The Bravo family series by Christine Rimmer is excellent! I really enjoy her work. She definitely has a long list of books but I don’t think I’ve read a bad one from her yet. Always a fulfilling read with her work.

I’ve never read 90% of the people you mentioned either. Only Emma Holly and Jennifer Crusie. Oh and one Lowell but I didnt enjoy it much.

And I think the deal with Bet Me was you either loved it or hated it. I havent come across anyone who had lukewarm feelings about it. In general I think the people who read it as their first Crusie loved it, while the older Crusie readers found more flaws with it.

      Hey Karen,

I’ve read Bet Me and although it was ‘good’ it didn’t strike me as ‘great’.

I did get sick of the bloody ‘Chicken Marsala’ though….but I lurved the cat….he was great!

Mary Jo Putney was the first romance writer I read because the book was in the library. I loved it so much I moved from sci fi fan to romance fan. I am slowly discovering romance writers who do interesting sci fi as well, such as Jayne Ann Krentz, but most seem to be writing paranormal romance. Brockman’s SEAL series is also pretty good. I am a voracious reader and usually manage a book a day. Wish I could make a living with this skill!:)
