Happy Martin Luther King Day…

Happy MLK Day to all you guys over in the states. To mark today, I decided to post an excerpt from the late Reverend King’s ‘I Have A Dream’ speech.

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; that one day right down in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and every mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plains and the crooked places will be made straight and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.”

I’ve always loved this speech. I love that it speaks of hope for the future, and as far as I’m concerned, his words still hold true today, as much as they did, all those years ago. Regardless of whether or not you’re American.

I dont know if you get the show The Boondocks in the UK. In last nights show MLK awoke from a coma 30 years later. At first I was offended but as usually Aaron McGruder had a method to his madness.

This speech is so powerful, so beautiful, it makes me cry every time I see it. Tears of pride, because my family, friends, and the children I work with are pure of heart and see each other for the people they are, not for the color of their skin. Times are slow to change, but King’s dream is shared by many, and my hopeful heart believes that number will continue to grow every day.

Dr. King did so much for all races. We’ve come so far, but we still have a long way to go.

I’ve always seen that speech as a powerful weapon. Dr. King gave us such a masterful piece of linguistic magic. That speech says it all. Much of it still applies today. The bank of justice still tell us “insufficient funds”.

This was an awe inspiring speech, even now, so many years later.

Man, I can only echo what’s already been said. It’s a masterpiece that speech. It’s incredible that there are still so many who have never read it. They talk about required reading in schools….that speech should be required reading for every school and university in the US, public and private.
