Herpes

Herpes

Gonorrhea

Female syphillis

I was just reading yet another Linda Howard book where the hero and heroine kept forgetting to use condoms, so I thought I’d post these pictures as a reminder as to why condoms are such a good idea. (g)

Condoms aren’t much use against herpes. Better than nothing though.

Ooh, Karen, HUGE hot-button topic for me. Thank you for posting this.

Last month I participated in a romance writers’ message board discussion about whether to have your characters use condoms or not. I was surprised to discover how many authors feel that fictional condom use “ruins the fantasy.”

One author said that when she reads about romance heroes and heroines using condoms, it lessens her enjoyment of the story because she comes away feeling as if the couple must be “dirty.” Because only infected folks use condoms, right? It’s not because they’re not willing to take even the tiniest chance in this day of rampant disease and unwanted pregnancies.

I guess my husband and I should book appointments at the free clinic. It’s amazing our bits and pieces haven’t rotted off yet. We’ve only been using condoms on and off for seventeen years.

It took every bit of my willpower to state my opinion in a way that didn’t melt the board into a puddle of scorched-smelling goo.

If my characters are doing it in a contemporary non-paranormal — and sometimes in a paranormal, too — they’re using condoms. Because chances are good they only just met, and any other behavior would be stupid. Who wants to read a story about stupid people? I sure don’t want to write one.

And for those who say it “rips them out of the fantasy?” I say the author didn’t handle it gracefully.

Gah. Thank you for letting me spew my venom, even if it’s a little off-topic.

The fastest way to make me look is to tell me not to, lol. Those didn’t gross me out nearly as much as the last ones. (The whole nest of syrupy sores under the hood on that uncircumcised guy still haunts me).

I feel bad because I have a book where they forget to use them (ducks), but then I have a book where it’s actually a plot point to wear them.

Oy ve, don’t think I’ll forget again.

Hey Selah, great comment! I think there should definitely be more condoms in fiction and movies.

Condom use should be considered ‘normal’ now and I agree, if you handle it right, it can still be sexy and erotic.

There’s a lot of stuff out there you really don’t want to catch. But having said that. . . getting something like herpes doesn’t mean the end of the world either! I’d love to see someone brave enough to have a character with herpes doing the whole dating thing. . . it’s not easy but it is certainly do-able.

    Ladies,

I hate to intrude , especially if it’s unwelcome , but wearing a condom just doesn’t work for some men (i.e. me).

Herpes is actually no big deal – a bit of cream and it’s gone.

HIV is the killer problem and it’s all a question of being very, very particular about who you sleep with.

    End of intrusion.

You sound kinda experienced there Merlin? (g)

As for being particular about who you sleep with, who says they’ve been careful themselves. I know ladies who look like ladies, smell like ladies, but underneath are ho bags who sleep around unprotected.

    Just sayin.
