Damn, I always miss out on the juicy stuff!

Why start a war with a reader? She was never gonna win.

Sometimes discretion is truly the better part of valour, unless of course you don’t have books to sell. (g)

It’s fascinating to see authors getting hysterical over other people misinterpreting something they’ve written. Because writing is their trade, I kind of expect authors to be more articulate when they argue a point. And if they can’t do it rationally, and can’t see how their words could honestly be misinterpreted the way they’ve been written, then frankly, I’m not encouraged to try their books.

O Cry me a river.. Plenty of people have said crap about me. The sweetness is in proving them wrong -and even better, when they prove themselves wrong 🙂

I plan to quit blogging after my hosting contract is over and just stay off the Internet. I think it’ll do me some good. I hate all this crap with the authors vs. readers shit.

You know. That one turned vicious and it did not have to. Why? The SB’s site never goes that far over to the dark side. How are they keeping it under control? What do they do that is different from the Ja(y)nes? Or have I just missed an all out flame fest there? Do you think it is because people posting do not ever expect to meet the people they are flaming in person? I NEVER rule that possibility out when post somewhere. You never know when someone you met online will show up at a convention or something and walk up to say hi.

Sigh. Some of it is obviously meant to be funny and it is, but some of it is just mean-assed-mean-for-the-sake-of-being-mean. I want to bottle that for a character.

Personally, I think it’s a matter of rhetoric, sarcasm and humour, and the degree in which these are meted out. Unfortunately, that kind of writing will always be open to interpretation and misinterpretation. It might also be because the style of Dear Author is more confronting for authors because the writing directly addresses them, rather than stepping back a little and divorcing the issue from the author. Some seem to take this personally, instead of recognising that it’s just a stylistic device that the Ja(y)nes use.

Or I could be talking out of my arse, in which case ignore everything I just wrote.

I think you’re right actually Kat, and in my opinion the reason why the SB’s don’t often have flame wars waged at them, is mainly because everything is written in a tongue in cheek way, and couched in terms that aren’t meant to offend people, whereas, (much like myself), the Ja(y)nes have a much more direct approach and aren’t too fussed about fence sitting or offending writers.

Which is generally why I prefer their site.

Also, it’s not often that their commentators get into rabid fangirl territory, another reason why I prefer the DA site.

Mean. I always view that is a description of intent. I don’t think I set out to be funny but I don’t think I set out to be mean. But I suppose that is up for interpretation.

I don’t aspire to be Smart Bitches. They have their own unique voice and I would sound like a fool trying to imitate them.
And frankly, I think blogdom would be boring if all the blogs were the same.

Well the Smart Bitches don’t really hit on too many current books. I think they are so busy right now their reviews are down from what they were.

And their really hot topics are about people who wouldn’t comment on a blog. Although I would dig seeing Napwhateverhisnameis post there.

And cover snarking only pisses off the insane like Changeling. I mean how many authors can really come out swinging cuz their covers got snarked on.

Also most of the bitchery are on the same page. So their comments run toward… I agree. Since Dear Author puts up new reviews almost every day there is more room to piss off authors.

Well that and the few authors that have gone off the edge of reason at DA the SB liked, so maybe they can have their turn next book….

Clarification: On the Lisle dust up I felt that some of the comments were extremely, over-the-top, hostile, mean. And it is entirely possible that the SB’s have had a thread that matched the DA \ Lisle comment threads’ level of vitriol but I missed it.

The writing style of each site and the mix of posts are very different. At heart though, they are both group blogs on women’s fiction with reviews and news with a similar melange of readers and fans. What is it that holds the flames in check at the SB’s and fans them at DA?

As a writer I would take on Candy in a full on flame fest before I would ever consider facing down Jane and there isn’t enough vicoden or rum on the planet to induce me to set out deliberately to piss off Candy. Tweak, annoy and razz on occassion … yeah. Call her a liar and double dog dare her to blog my ass into a leetle puddle of bat poo? No.

Why Candy over Jane then? Because I have observed the following behavior from Candy:

    a. She concedes when she is wrong.
    b. She can agree to disagree when an argument appears mired in muck too deep to slog out of.
    c. She can argue the opposite side for argument’s sake.
    d. She will shake hands at the end of a debate … sort of a “live to fight another day” insousance.

Jane goes straight for the jugular and clamps down until the prey is dead. End of debate.

It depends on your perspective as to which is more cruel and scary. Candy – who toys with her food or Jane who kills it right off the bat.

I’m just going to go move to Tuvalu now. † v^v †

Keishon, I sincerely hope you don’t stop blogging. I know that the readers vs authors shit gets out of hand sometimes, but it’s really not as bad as all that. I actually do remember that authors are human like the rest of us, and are therefore prone to fucking up occasionally, plus most romance writers are women, so there’s always gonna be tantrums and tiara pitching at the slightest provocations.

That’s just how some women are. I see it all the time in my real life.

Although it annoys me most of the time, I’m sometimes glad that Linda Howard doesn’t have an online presence, I’d be gutted if I discovered that she was an arsehole.

    This is a bad thing?

Ferfe, I think the reason that I prefer Jane’s approach is because in real life, you always know where you stand with the Janes of this world. She calls a spade a spade, and isn’t afraid to batten down the hatches and slog it out.

As for the whole backing down thing, well, she is a lawyer, so I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for her to admit she’s wrong. (g)

    My kinda badass bitch.

OK, enough nice things about Jane, I’m making myself sick for Oprah’s sake.

    1. I love watching bitch-fights involving Holly Lisle, because when Holly Lisle gets pissed-off, she’s BUGFUCK NUTTY.

    2. Color me puzzled as to why there haven’t been more all-out balls-to-the-wall flame-wars at SB. There’s been quite a bit of disagreement, some of it heated, even, but most of it has been polite.

    3. All this analysis of my character by people who haven’t interacted with me much is fascinating. I think Karen Scott came within an asshair of accusing me of being diplomatic. I’m watching my cred go down in flames. *weeps*

    4. Holy fucking shit, there’s a lot to read, and I have a project that’s already one week overdue. Why am I such a sucker for drama? If I get fired, it’s all your fault.

“Interacted” is the key term. I said “observed”. One does not hold out a dead tuna to a Great White while treading water and say “Here fishy, fishy”. Well. Some might. Someone like Holly. Me? I’ll just watch it from the boat, thanks.

Candy, ya gotta admit, even your rants (as in yours and Sarah’s) are done in such a way, that most people would find it difficult to be offended. (With the exception of plebs obviously)

There’s nothing wrong with that, just different styles is all.

And incidentally, being diplomatic isn’t actually a bad thing, I just love drama, especially when I can stick my neck out, hurl some mud, then retreat back into my hole to watch the fireworks.

How else am I supposed to get my kicks?

Ferfe: “Interacted” is the key term. I said “observed”.

But then mere observation can’t compare with actual interaction. As many scientists have learned, there’s a wealth of information available if you’re not afraid of a more hands-on approach.

Of course, those scientists are often the ones who die in volcano eruptions or are killed by poachers.

Knitting? Thinking of God, Queen and country? Volunteering at the local Ladies’ Auxiliary Society?

Just fyi to Karen: I’ve known Linda Howard for years. She’s not an arsehole. She’s smart and funny and can snark (southern style) with the best of them.

So your guts would be safe if she ever wandered online.

And I’d take Candy on. And that other smartypants bitch, Sara. And all the Ja(y)nes–yeah, every one. At the same time. With my hands tied behind my back. Yeah, that’s right, I’d take them on with my TOES! Painted bloody murder red. And you, too, Brit girl.
