"I have been forced to make this decision based on lack of finances – hormonal females and bitching."
Wednesday, August 29, 2007Posted in: authors being treated badly, Mardi Gras Publishing, temperamental publishers
I don’t know how accurate this is, but apparently this is what the CEO of Mardi Gras Publishing had to say in response to some of the comments that have been floating around, re the closure of MGP. (Bare in mind this info was posted by an anonymous source, so cannot be taken as gospel.)
“In response to this post – I went MIA due to computer issues. And have now leased a system I can not afford.
This previous post is NOT from all the editors, authors and staff. Only a small group.
And the satinrougepress. com web site had been there since mardi gras opened because it was originally surpose to be the satin rouge line location.
It amazes me how people continue to post non-accurate information.
Mardi Gras Publishing is officially closing September 1, 2007 I have been forced to make this decision based on lack of finances – hormonal females and bitching.
I’m tired of it and refuse to listen to it any more. I gave this company 110% – quit my job and have received nothing but aggravation since. I have NO intention of opening another company, have you lost your mind?!
Teresa”
Hmmm… Hormonal females eh? Nice…
Incidentally, Teresa, if these aren’t your words, just let me know, and I’ll amend accordingly. Although judging from this report of your past unethical behaviour, I have a feeling that the words were indeed yours.

Patti,
To quote what a really smart person once said…
Who ARE you?
BUT this:
For ANON don’t dare try this again. I better not find my name being smudged. By the way you have very nice green eyes…sure your real name isn’t jealousey?
is classic… thanks muchly for the giggle… Oh and if you decide to call me out and tell me ‘don’t you dare’ do finish the threat.
I do so hate cliffhangers. Play on

Something doesn’t add up here.
Why are some Anonymice people bringing this Wendi Felton person into the MGP mess? From what I understand, she’s started her own company and has no ties anymore with MGP. So why are some people bringing up her alleged sins?

A wise observation, Mrs. G. Opinions about Wendi are very polarized. I, for one, chose to form my own rather than go off others.
I have told Wendi personally that only time will tell if Red Rose Publishing will sink or swim. But so far I am impressed with her. Royalties are paid quarterly, but she has provided me with statements every month thus far, she answers all questions, and so on and so forth.
The issue here isn’t Wendi Felter; it’s Mardi Gras Publishing and Teresa Jacobs.

As a matter of fact I spoke against the e-book industry to RWA and my local chapter NJRW.
Erm… according to my sources Patti, you’ve submitted to various e-publishers and been rejected time and time again, for both content editing and line editing positions.
Why would you complain about an industry that you yourself have tried to gain entry into?
Some people may see that as sour grapes.
Just sayin’.
By the way, who do you write for again?

I really wish I knew where you were getting your information from Karen. I have never been fired for any editing position I had nor have I been rejected for my work, Let’s see…How about you query Tamara McHatton, Rochelle Webber, Dawn Seewer, Karen Simpson…I can go on hunny…you can contact Tina Haversham at Extasy, Kathryn Struck, Dick Claussen, Rene Walden…Need I saw more? No matter what you do you cannot touch my credibility…My agent is Belinda WIlliams at Literary Lifestyles and my Director is Michael Maxx Kelly…Go ahead open your big mouth some more, and contact all these people…Caridad Scordato, Irene Petersen…they know who I am…Oh let’s not for get Deb Mullins, Cris Janssen, Jan Jansen, Eloisa James…shall I go on or is this enough for you? Now I strongly advise you to shut your mouth before you wind up with a leagl suit on your hands for slander.

Karen, you are wrong about that. I am the owner of an editing company. I hired Patti on, so I vouch for her work.

Patti, this isn’t intended to be a smart ass question. I am just genuinely curious. Why, as a writer, do you have a video director (Michael Maxx Kelly)?

OK Patti, apparently my sources were wrong, but I still have no idea who you are.
Now I strongly advise you to shut your mouth before you wind up with a leagl suit on your hands for slander.
Didn’t I see you once in a porn film? Something to do with riding donkeys and Great Danes?
Oh that’s it, you were the one who was being ridden, and hard by the looks of things. Sorry, my bad.
Now listen up bitch, you’re obviously a jumped up twat who thinks that their shit doesn’t smell, but let me tell you, on here I couldn’t give a flying fuck who you are, as long as you don’t annoy me. And threatening to sue people over worthless shit, brings out the not-so-nice me.
Now take your ten hairstylists, twenty cooks, 40 butlers, and 100 jugglers, and get the fuck off my blog.
How’s that for frank speaking?
Still wanna sue?

That was f’ing awesome woman.
And by the way, she has been rejected from epubs for her work before. I wrote one of the rejections letters.

What is most distrubing and brought tears to my eyes today was finding out that the book that was supposed to be sold for charity with all royalties going to this entity never happened. Teresa never gave it to the charity but pocketed the money. This is so incredibly disheartening, to put it mildly.
Maybe her dog ate the royalties, too.

As an author, you should be more professional than that.

Oh, that’s so sweet, you assume I’m an author. Awww….
I’m much worse than that I’m afraid.
As for professionalism, wow, anybody who comes onto a reader blog and starts threatening to sue people left, right, and centre, really needs to get a grip.

Never mind, I think I figured it out. It’s the http://www.suitemag.com thing, right? (You’re listed as the senior editor)
Do you have videos like the Playgirl site does, or is it just teaser pics?

I have to admit that this whole situation saddens me, on a number of levels, because so many people tasted publishing with this and other similar companies, often for the first time, and have gotten a lingering burn in their mouth.
It also reminds me that a BUNCH of people don’t understand how publishing interplays with the rest of contract/bankruptcy/collection law. Please, please PLEASE–if you were published with any of the publishers who have recently made the decision to bankrupt, contact an attorney! Rights returned to the author DO NOT mean rights available to that author to later sell in bankruptcy law. Yes, every publisher in the world inserts a “if we bankrupt, we’ll return the rights” clause and every single publisher does it knowing that if a bankruptcy actually occurs, it means NOTHING. Bankruptcy law has a provision called an “automatic stay” which prevents a company (in this case, the publisher) from dispersing items that might be considered “assets” to pay creditors. Authors of a publisher are both creditor and ASSET–the manuscripts have value that can be sold to another company to pay back creditors. A Bankruptcy Trustee, who determines who gets paid when, has the right to negate the return of rights to a publisher–going as far back as six months PRIOR to the bankruptcy filing.
This is only a very BRIEF overview and doesn’t give all the cites and links and such and isn’t intended to advise on individual contracts (because I’m not an attorney–just a concerned author and former IP paralegal.) Be very VERY careful about what you do with your books if you receive a return of rights letter. It might be valuable at some future point, but not until after the bankruptcy is concluded.
Next in my mind is the issue of the unsigned royalty checks. Every state is different on how they deal with unsigned checks that are presented. Some allow the bearer to cash them anyway and if they don’t clear the presenter can be subject to “bad check” laws. Again, check with an attorney, because there are a lot of things about business dealings and how entertainment law cooperates with other areas of law that are really important for authors to learn.
I wish you all luck and hope this will all soon be behind you with a brighter future again. Good luck!

Hey, Laura, it could also be because APs Authors Den profile says that her first erotica book Lone Huntress will be a TV anime series with the Scifi channel and her second Unpredicted Prophecy will be a live action movie.
You can read it at http://www.authorsden.com/apmiller
But she was with MGP. Didn’t she say she wouldn’t publish with an epub? I’m confoosed

I agree with the business plan. I too have one and I now take the time to research everything I do. I’ve learned from the wrongs of the business.
As to Wendi, the subject was Mardi Gras Publishing but it was also about publishing companies that don’t give a shit about their authors. You say you have experience in the publishing business. Working for a publisher as senior editor doesn’t give you experience.
And one other thing. We know how Mardi Gras fucked up big time, and you were their senior editor, so supposedly you have experience right well check
