What Authors Need To Look For In An E-Publisher…
Sunday, September 2, 2007Posted in: Jane Does E-publishing
Over at Dear Author, Jane has a marvellous post up, about what authors should look for in an e-publisher.
If you’re an author considering submitting to an e-publishing house, you really need to read her post. It just may save you lots of grief in the long run.
If you’re an author who’s e-publisher isn’t quite playing cricket, get your arse over to either Emily Veinglory’s Erecsite, or Piers Anthony’s website, and tell them your story. You never know, there may be others out there with the same issues, who are also afraid to speak out.
Sometimes it only takes one.
Just one bit of advice from me, if you’re a writer who wants to be published, or is already published, and you’re posting in a public forum, (e.g., a blog) remember to, A, make use of the spell checker option on Word, B, try to avoid writing in caps if possible, and C, ask yourself if what you’ve just written makes you sound crazy. If the answer is yes, utilise the delete button for fuck’s sake.

A lot of my forum posts are borderline illiterate, but only my editor know for sure….

I don’t know about Internet Explorer, but Firefox has a spell check built in. It underlines the words for you in red, that you’ve spelled wrong, while typing a blog post, forum message or comment. Then you can right click it and it suggests alternatives. This is especially handy for an editor who doesn’t want people to know she can’t ever seem to spell definitely correctly 😉

Hey with all these sites being mentioned lately I went to one and I must say it gave me a brilliant idea for my own ePublisher site.
Instead of the normal same old, well thought out, categories like Regency or Contemporary or Western. Instead I have decided each one will be a different color My Little Pony! The money will flow I tell you.
What you guys think?

I’ve been reading a lot about e-publishing since so many blogs have reported on it over the last few months. So I’ve read a lot of comments. And this is the impression I’ve taken away, so far.
Too many e-pubs (and editors, and publishers) write poorly and carelessly in these forums. Too many refuse to use the damn shift key or a dictionary. Too many can’t seem to structure a proper sentence much less a paragraph. Too many–even when there was a thread on this blog on the subject–just kept right on posting with no grip whatsoever on basic grammar, spelling or even proper word use.
However informal a comment on the blog might be, if you want to claim you’re a writer, for sweet plastic Baby Jesus’s sake, write coherently. PROOF. At least take a quick scan of your post before you hit send.
It matters. The impression I’ve gotten through this is that in the e-pool the ones who swim well, swim strongly are the exception, while scores of others are just madly splashing around.
This can’t be the image you want to project.
(Note: You will not get an electric shock by using the shift key, the space bar or the apostrophe key. Second note: A dictionary is not a tool of Satan.)

Sigh… this is why more of them need to use the delete key like Karen said. Particularly when it comes to public forums. And online…all forums are public, whether people realize it or not.

There’s probably not a one of us who doesn’t make an error in writing some time or another- however, if there is a Satan, I imagine he gets his kicks whenever a frothing writer decides to shoot off a multi-paragraph tirade without once turning on the spell checker. Nothing like a hellish Blogland debate to take one’s mind off stuff like war and politics, LOL!

Desiree Erotique – I have to ask: Are you AP Miller? I recall Google returning a desireeerotique.blogspot.com domain when I typed in “AP Miller”.
Please correct me if I’m wrong. I’m easily confused with writers and their multiple pseudonyms.

J.C. Wilder,
Shoot, I was just drooling over your Shadow Dwellers covers. Retribution looks hawt.
Dang it, another series to buy.

Ann, I knew AP from MGP when I was with them, and I once featured one of her books at my blog (I’ve featured other authors from time to time), but NO I’m not her. I write under my real name, but by Thor’s great swinging balls NO I am not AP Miller!
AP, if you’re hanging around -you were kind to me when I needed support, thanks, but your heated words in Blogland have been just a tad bit embarrassing!
