With Samhain Publishing, “It’s all about the story”, with Blade Publishing, “It’s all about the journey”.

Also, this may be me just being a tad over-picky, but doesn’t the Blade Publishing website, look a little familiar? Tagline, background colour, layout, and all? I’m thinking they built the website, whilst navigating around Samhain, which in itself isn’t a bad thing, but you’d think they’d try to make it a little less obvious wouldn’t you?

Whatever happened to originality huh? Sheesh.

They’re going to have a little more difficulty duplicating Angela James, which is probably one of Samhain’s greatest assets.

    Whoa!

Given that the covers say “Coming Soon,” let’s hope that it’ll remain like this only temporarily, more as a guiding template until they customize things…

    Otherwise

Gah, what happened to the formatting of the comment box?

  • I don’t know if it’s on purpose or not, but the colors, the way the page is formatted, the slogan – it’s all totally stepping on, very clearly so, Samhain.

  • from their page of no-nos! they don’t want to see “ . . .any type of play that involves bodily fluids (which includes solid form).” SO much for the male half of the sketch having any fun in the eroticas. And what about felching?

Clearly all it takes is a moon and a good tag-on finish to this sentence: It’s all about the {…..} and we’re on our way.

I’m outta here to start a epublishing business

  • Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? 😆

I’m amused by this quote from their paragraph of no-nos: “If it is disgusting, we don’t want it.”

I suppose nobody has considered that “disgusting” is an inherently subjective term. I’m thinking of the letters appearing in RWR that complained of erotic romance, stating that anal sex is “disgusting.” There are people who think that BDSM is “disgusting.” Or, hell, that even oral sex is “disgusting.” And then, on the more extreme edge, you’ve got people who wouldn’t consider a sex scene with a shifted were as “disgusting.”

What precisely do they mean? Should manuscripts not be submitted if somebody, somewhere, could consider the content disgusting? Those are going to be some pretty boring books…

I just had one of those “aw shucks” moments where I’d be kicking the toe of my shoe in the dirt–if I were wearing shoes or anywhere near dirt.

I’m not sure what to say about the website. At least the moon is on the right? We’re flattered that we’re the standard they’ve chosen to set themselves by? Maybe it’s like plot and there are only so many original tagline and website ideas out there? Perhaps they cruised websites and made a list of what they liked, and a lot of that was on our website, and when it came time to design, there was unconscious transference to their website. It happens.

I do think a new publisher needs to brand themselves, in many ways like a new author does, so it would be a shame to not take advantage of the chance to brand yourself as a publisher who’s going to do it fresh and new and different from the others. Sure, you want to identify with the publishers who seem to be doing it right, but you also want to stand out and use your website to show how you’ll be different from what’s already established.

  • Coming back to say I realized I neglected to actually say thank you to Whey for the compliment. So thank you!

  • The minute I see stretched out graphics it is so totally over.

Samhain knows what they are doing.

No No No! It takes little to no skills to Photoshop and maintain aspect ratio when sizing book covers people.

Hell, I do it with every review!

  • Is this Rene Lyons new name? I can’t keep up with the openings/closings/changing of epubs.

  • Huh. I think I’m more impressed that anyone has the freaking…um…energy to try a new epublishing house. I think Samhain is a great model, but why would you come up against them so directly?

  • my reaction: *sigh* Another one? I wonder how long this one will last.
