How Are They Doing Now?

Seeing Rene Rocco’s comment about the closure of DEP, over at Dear Author reminded me that I ought to go and check how Dragon Spell Publishing Lyrical Press are doing these days.

According to their website, they only have eleven authors on their books so far. They open in May.

I wonder if Rene’s worried at all, or perhaps she has lots more authors that aren’t listed on the website? Admittedly, some may think that eleven authors is sufficient.

For the length of time she’s had to recruit authors though, I’m not so sure eleven is enough.

    Is that eleven DIFFERENT authors?

    Who knows.

Eleven people who are gonna regret the hell out of this choice a year from now, for sure.

question: how many epubs are owned, run, and/or edited by authors, esp. authors who are actively publishing their own work through the press?

  • Many of them. The different is whether they are publisher-authors, or author-publishers.

The different is whether they are publisher-authors, or author-publishers.

As in whether they are publishers first or authors first? That certainly makes sense. I have just been wondering how many epresses start because frustrated authors want to do it “better,” not only for themselves but for their fellow authors. Of course, the business of publishing requires very different skills than the work of writing books, and I wonder how much of the difficulty we’re seeing emerges from this difference.
