Do You Know…

The name of the current British Prime Minister?

This is a serious question. Without the aid of Google, would you know what his name is?

The reason I ask is because he’s currently in the US, and nobody there seems to have a clue as to his identity. I daresay The Pope got a better reception (which I guess is par for the course anyway, seeing as he isn’t a politician) than he did.

It has to be said though, he’s just been voted the most boring man in England. Ouch.

  • Mr. Brown does keep a lower profile that Mr. Blair did, doesn’t he? I didn’t realize he was here. Normally I do pay attention to that sort of thing but his trip is completely overshadowed by the pope being in town.

Srsly, the mass at the ballpark ended not too long ago, and all the people leaving it were on the Metro when I returned from lunch. Traffic and security are completely disrupted.

My guess is Brown (but I’m Canadian, not American, I don’t know if that makes a difference)

  • I knew he was Gordon Brown, but I had no idea he was here.

  • Okay I confess, I have no idea who took over after Blair left. And I had no idea he was currently visiting the States. I was aware of the Pope’s visit, and here I am a backslidden Protestant who shouldn’t care. *goes back to writing and living inside my isolationist head*

  • Sorry, I’m guilty of not knowing. But then again, politics are of no interest to me. If it comes on TV, I turn it.

The best part about all this – according to my paper yesterday it was the Whitehouse that suggested this as a good time to visit. There was also a picture of him in the Metro this morning – standing gaumlessly on the set of Good Morning America. Just goes to show how high he’s rated as a world leader if he’s left alone on set with no network minion fussing over him.

  • After Tony Blair, Gordon Brown’s low-profile strategy is probably a smart move.

(And I only know because I keep a close eye on politics because of its influence in the financial sector.)

  • I vaguely remember it being Brown something. 🙂 It’s telling that I know the name of the French president when before I was completely in the dark about France’s politics and the country’s leaders. But I pretty much only know Sarcozi (sp?) from the article I read about his citizens’ disgust over his ‘American, pretentious, individualistic’ jogging habit. And his new model wife. I think he’s just making waves because some of his different lifestyle choices that have stuck out.

I’m also usually aware of which countries have female presidents, like Chile because that’s always interesting.

Also, it could be a good sign that we haven’t really heard anything from Brown.

  • Yes, I’m American and I do know that Gordon Brown is the Prime Minister. Not all of us are living in a bubble…

Could be Mr. Brown has heard the Americans joke about how to tell if a politician is lying. It happens when their mouth is moving.

Nope, I had no idea. I sorta like Mr. Brown now.

  • Yes, I know.
And he’s probably relieved not to have press hounds after him.

  • I think Gordon Brown is far more interesting than Blair, and the Blair/Brown relationship was positively Shakespearean. Brown doesn’t just fall back on faith and patriotism arguments, he is a thinker and very complex. Maybe that just doesn;t make for good sound bites. But his low image must surely be mainly due to the fact he’s never stood for election.

  • No, no, the best part is this. I was watching an American news program (forget which one) that showed George Bush and Dick Cheney at Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas … except the guy with Bush was John Howard, Australia’s then-Prime Minister, NOT Cheney. Bwahahahahaha.

If Americans trip up on their own people, it’s no surprise that you’re not hearing about Mr. Brown. Wonder if he’s there to talk about the more than a quarter of a trillion dollars the US owes Britain? (Yes, I meant trillion. And that number is actually almost a year out of date.)

Embarassed to say all I could remember is Gordy, and that’s just because I had linked his first name in my mind with a local restaurant called Gordy’s. I’m usually a bit better than that at keeping track. And I had no clue he was in the country, but that’s because our media is totally obsessed with the Presidential contest that will not die.

  • Um, I’m afraid I couldn’t remember his name and barely his face. I only knew he replaced the very popular Tony Blair a little while ago. *shakes head* I suck.

I knew who he is and that he is here. And he may be boring, but his IQ is higher than that of the inadequate shrub. And I also heard he’s delaying the withdrawal of more troops because of the violence in the south of Iraq.

I may be an American, but I try to keep up. (But I don’t know what Darth Cheney looks like either.)

Did you hear Bush held a birthday party for the Pope, but the Pope refused to attend it? The man is dim.

Um, no, no I can’t. I was talking to my husband while reading this, and he came up with ‘something Brown’. Is that it? I’m going to go back and read the comments now, just to see if I can get his name.

Wow, most boring. What an awful title to get.

Oh, and I ignore the pope too…but I guess I knew he was coming over…didn’t know he’d made it though.

I haven’t read the other comments but yes I know his name.
Remember Maili’s list of the most common Scottish names and Brown was most popular by far?
I suppose you meant for North Americans to answer, not Australians.

  • Gordon Brown–but only because of the hoopla surrounding Tony Blair stepping down.

His name is Gordon Brown and he never smiles. Except when he is on American Idol. That was weird because it looked so contrived. Is he Labour?

Heard him interviewed on NPR the other day and wondered how long he had been here.
