Am I The Only Person…

Who doesn’t understand why sailing is considered an olympic sport?
I get ridiculously annoyed every time I see it on the TV.
I haven’t been this annoyed since those Scottish women, won the gold (or was it silver?) medal for curling. That was a serious WTF? moment for me.
What other so-called olympic sports do you think ought to be binned?

Ping pong. For god’s sake ping pong. Next thing you know foosball will be included. I also think it sucks that American football isn’t included, but basketball and soccer and such are. But even though there is the World League, the majority of other countries don’t play football as we Americans know it, so I understand why it isn’t included. ๐

Dressage. The horse thing where people wear top hats and prance around on a horse that walks in neat lines. Sport? idk.

Rhythmic gymnastics. Seriously, dancing around with a hoop, clubs, or ribbon? Why not have ballet, modern dance, or ballroom dancing (they already do that in the winter olympics, only with skates on) in that case? Not this goofy hybrid. Makes me cringe.

Trampoline. But then, since someone mentioned my beloved dressage on a list of non-sports, (which takes years of practice and training, originally used to train warhorses when they really did fight wars with them), I shall have to say that even Olympic Walking is a sport in its own right.
Speaking of which, shameless plug, my book from EC, Riding Partner, deals with Olympic level show-jumping, and Cowboy Up deals with a dressage rider (and a reining rider, but Reining is still exhibition in the Olympics, and I don’t think made it to Beijing), both of which are combined in the print book Ready to Ride.
Anyway… just had to speak up on behalf of dressage. It was beautiful to watch tonight. ๐

Oh my. Where do I start?? Badminton for sure, ping pong a close second and one of the most boring…. WATER POLO. Watching that makes me want to poke my eyes out with a burning stick.

I’m having serious trouble understanding the synchronized diving… I mean — 1 person, sure I get it…but really — why 2 doing exactly the same thing at exactly the same time……

I dunno, synchro diving is rather amazing when you think of it. Two people doing a hard dive in synchronization? I thought it was pretty damn cool.

Sure, it’s beautiful to watch, but as a competitive sports for Christ’s sake? I don’t think so.

Any sport that is not first past the post because the judging can never be truly objective.
AND in the next Eurovision song contest the competitors should be made to run not sing because the awarding of points there is mind boggling. Wait. Stop. That’s the fun of it. Carry on.

Leave ping pong, I’d rather say table tennis, alone. And badminton – my favorite sport. Come on people, there has to be someone interested in defending these two – LOL!!
Take away speed walking or whatever that is. You can throw a hip out of joint with that sport. Save it for the suburbs.

I was thinking about this last night, because of any of Olympic sports, we Kiwis tend to do well in anything ‘on’ water.
The Olympics is not only about physical prowess, but mental prowess as well. Sailing is one of the ultimate tactical sports (versus tactile). While there is a strength element sailing is about outmanoeuvring your competitor, thinking many steps ahead.
Beach volleyball is annoying the crap out of me this year. It’s just too feel good, touch each others hands and pat your partner on the butt for me.

I love the sailing, especially the small boats. Also the windsurfing and the kayaking. They just need to show the olympucs on more channels for more hours rather than try to ‘readers digest’ it into some form everyone will like. It is meant to represent all sport, so logically more like a box of chocolates than a cookie.

I don’t like seeing equestrian events in the Olympics. I think the Olympics should be strictly about human athletes pushing and testing their own bodies, and animals shouldn’t be involved. I love equestrian sports otherwise, just not in the Olympics.

How do you feel about BMX bike racing? I was watching that this evening and my first thought was “you’ve got to be kidding me”, but the riders definitely exert them selves. I’m just not sure I consider it an Olympic sport.
