Colin Powell’s wonderfully articulated endorsement of Senator Obama, lifted from Ann Bruce’s blog:

And from Angela James’ blog, this most excellent rant by Keith Olbermann:

  • Wow, very articulate. Many here had always hoped that he would run. I also heard that Scott McClellan, Bush’s first Spokespoman, endorsed Obama today. Interesting.

Jon Stewart, being a native New Jerseyan and current New Yorker (you know, a Fake American), took a little bit of umbrage to this characterization. I think he explains the Real American vs Fake American dichotomy best.

That stinks! Sorry you couldn’t view the clips. Does this work for you? http://tinyurl.com/589kzh That’s from Hulu & it’s the entire episode. The clips I posted were the first segment of the show split in two. The second segment, if you can watch this, also pertains to the Real America/Fake America issue.

And if you didn’t quite understand how Jon Stewart feels about that whole campaign strategy, watch the very end of the show before the “Moment of Zen.” He makes his feelings crystal clear then.

  • I think Jon Stewart’s show is the “real” shocker.

I had seen each of these interviews individually and cringed but he weaves them all into a narrative that not only makes sense in a scary way but shows how this whole “real” America versus “fake” America word play is being used on purpose to try and get people to vote for McCain out of fear or prejudice.

Just replace “real” with the word “white”. At this point I hope this coded language blows up for the Republicans so bad they lose it all. House, Senate, White House… the whole thing. Michael Moore is gonna make a huge documentary out of this whole thing just watch.

  • A recent McCain rally here in North Carolina is yet another case in point that the Republicans have decided that instead of using terms like “white” use “real”… Rep. Robin Hayes (R-N.C.) told a North Carolina crowd that “liberals hate real Americans that work and accomplish and achieve and believe in God,”.

  • An erudite, eloquence, confident man will always stand head and shoulders above the crowd. Throw in passable looks (doesn’t have to be drop-dead gorgeous), a killer smile, direct eye contact, passion, and conviction as he speaks, and a natty suit (heh), and I’m crushing like mad.

I’m not American, but all that ‘real’ American and ‘pro’ American shiite is bugging me. I don’t believe for a moment they’re talking only to, or primarily about, small town values or Republican beliefs. It’s code: it’s divisive, exclusive and subliminally racist. They’re not doing the America of ALL Americans any favours by continuing with this message.

It’s “United we stand, divided we fall.”. Not: united we the Real American’s get ahead, and divided the anti-american’s (the ‘supposed’ terrorists and the socialists with their hands out waiting to grab our hard earned money) get the shit end of the stick so richly they deserve.

Has anyone else noticed that it is Sarah Palin and those Republicans claiming to be her best friends that are in the forefront on all this? It’s almost a reverse Palin/McCain ticket now.

I think it shows that McCain who has made an obvious point of squelching people expressing this coded message actually has no place politically with this group of bigoted people. It’s as if the racist and McCarthyist hard line Religious Right members of the Republican party are using McCain and his run as a puppet to get Sarah and her message out there at all costs.

I think you’re totally right, Teddypig. Folks like Dobson and LaHaye are the ones who pushed for Palin’s selection, and may the gods help us all if their plans come to fruition.

I thought previous election cycles were nasty, but I’ve never seen ANYTHING like this.

  • In a recent speech she replaced ‘real American’ with ‘patriot’ and basically said the whole thing again.
