Dear me.

When did Amazon.com turn into a bunch of right-wing lunatics? How the fuck did that happen?

Smartbitch Sarah tweeted earlier that Amazon have begun systematically stripping all gay & lesbian fiction, and erotic fiction of their Amazon sales rankings.

Jaci Burton, Shannon Stacey, Maya Banks and Larissa Ione have reportedly lost their Amazon rankings on some of their books.

They’ve also targeted gay non-fiction. WTF?

This was their explanation when questioned by an author who found his books had also been stripped:

In consideration of our entire customer base, we exclude “adult” material from appearing in some searches and best seller lists. Since these lists are generated using sales ranks, adult materials must also be excluded from that feature.

Hence, if you have further questions, kindly write back to us.

Best regards,

Amazon.com Advantage

Like seriously, who thought this was a good idea?

They’re basically saying that consumer sales don’t matter. They’re basically saying that if ten million people decided to buy an erotic or gay novel, it wouldn’t make a blind bit of difference. They must protect the public from themselves at all costs, whilst negatively impacting any author who writes gay or erotic fiction.

This is what happens when a company gets too big for its boots.

There should be a universal boycott of Amazon and their services, for this latest bit of fuckwittery, but unfortunately, they offer cheap books, delivered to your door, and quite frankly, some readers just don’t give a flying monkey’s bollocks.

For this bit of flaming ass-hattery my dear Amazon, you have earned the privileged title of Fucktards Of The Month.

I swear, they’ll get their just desserts one day.

If anybody fancies writing to them to complain, Amazon Exec office e-mail – ecr@amazon.com and the customer service phone number is 1-800-201-7575.

Help The SBs Googlebomb Amazon. Commence, Amazon Rank, because Amazon really are fucking rank.

  • Just caught this on EREC as I’ve been in the writing cave for several days. It is a deplorable act of censorship. It strips freedom of choice. It strips freedom of knowledge. It makes them a hypocrite (again) of their purpose. Retailers who serve all are expected to remain unbiased, or they shouldn’t offer to represent “all”.

It is a huge step backward. Amazon who? Please look for me at B&N or even Target.com. *spurns the monopoly machine*

*Was that a good flounce? LOL*

A friend of mine just emailed me to let me know that all the titles from PHAZE and Siren Publishing the rankings have been pulled regardless of their genre, though the Siren books, some of the rankings are still on their Kindle books.

This is a horrible thing, and just puts another nail in the “not buying from Amazon” coffin.

  • Oh, wow. How messed up! And stupid! How many people use their Kindles and ereaders to buy the naughty stuff they’d rather not walk into a store and pick up? (Not me, of course, but I have friends who blush at the thought of picking up an erotica book at their local B&N.) Yeah, let’s make it really hard for them to find the books that might appeal to them by browsing sales rankings. If they’re really that concerned about protecting people from sexy books popping up in bestseller lists, why not just put an asterisk by the title or some other mark denoting the strong sexual content? If you don’t like super steamy, don’t click! I mean, jeez!

  • I’ve written an e-mail, albeit short and to the point, because any longer and it would just be an exercise in profanity. I have no words to describe how absolutely pissed off I am at this.

Well, as I see it, some group is lobbying their tails off with Amazon to stop the ranking of these books. What a crock!!!!!!

Sadly, extremists of any religion will gather and strike. That’s what this whole hoo-haw is smelling like to me.

    Le Sigh

  • The whole thing just makes me want to go on a massive spending spree at Barnes & Noble and Borders. The sad thing is, I spend a crapwad of money at Amazon every year. And I feel like I’ve been stabbed in the back. And there’s no rhyme nor reason to what they’re doing, because there are still plenty of erotic books still showing as listed and ranked. And please…they’ve deranked DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterly’s Lover? God forbid we should offer classic literature.

    So…wtf? indeed.

  • I wrote a letter and signed the petition.

  • […] can keep up with the brou-ha-ha at Dear Author, Karen Knows Best and Smart Bitches, which has instituted a GoogleBomb. No, I have no idea what that actually means. […]

  • I write Christian and sweet romance, and I agree that is wrong of Amazon. It really doesn’t make sense.

I don’t know what to make of this. Do Amazon really have a homophobic agenda, or is this a technical fuck up? If they want to make books with adult content unavailable to kids, then OK. But surely there’s a way to do that without excluding all potential buyers. Also, if they want to rate books with sexual content, they should also rate ones containing violence. But I guess that would pretty much elimate all books on the NYT bestseller list!

  • I checked out the situation earlier today, and found 18 out of 20 books I searched for deprived of sales ranking, and not a one of these adult titles were aimed at the M/M market. Not that I want M/M censored, just saying the bias is extended to more than just the M/M market. I don’t feel any book should be censored and for Amazon to play the Lit Nanny has turned me off from them.

Of an interesting note: I did find some sales ranks listed for products on sale at Amazon, products which some of us might feel poses a bigger potential threat to children than any book. If you’re interested, a short acquaintance of some of these products are found under the “Customer-safe deemed products” list at

I thank my lucky stars that I work at a bookstore where I can order the titles I want. The bad side is I used to go to Amazon to see what was coming out in the next few months. I just did it less than a week ago and I thought the upcoming offerings in just paranormal was skimpy…so obviously this is not just the gay/erotica listings. But hey! You can still get the serial killer how to book or find books on building a nuclear bomb.

I had planned to use them if Borders went out of business. Not. I’ll use BAMM or B&N if needed. And I spend tons of money on books.
