A lot of people seemed rather surprised about REPUBLICAN governor Mark Sanford cheating on his wife, but I’m not exactly sure why.
He will not be the only high profile politician giving it to somebody other than his wife. He’s a politician for God’s sake. All that power? Of course it’s bound to go to their heads (pun intended).
Some politicians start unnecessary wars, others cheat on their wives. I know which I prefer.
By the way, what kind of wife could read the following, and take the bastard back?
During an emotional interview at his Statehouse office with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Sanford said Chapur is his soul mate but he’s trying to fall back in love with his wife.
Unbelievable. I’d be very tempted to take a rusty knife to his bits if I was her.

“…he’s trying to fall back in love with his wife.”
That is painful to read. I cannot imagine how his wife must feel at the great effort he is going to make in trying to love her again. What annoys me most is he is playing on the ‘soul mate’ idea. Does he think we’re all going to go ‘oh well, he found his soul mate. That makes a huge difference in his screwing around on his wife.’ The man is a complete waste of space.

Sanford was a surprise because the man is about as asexual as you can get (or so we thought).
It’s scary how many citizens blame the wife. When the story first broke, many comments in the local papers had people insisting this wouldn’t have happened if she’d done her “wifely duties”.
The worst part is that his minister made a comment about marriage being a DUTY once the passion is gone.

That, alone (the soul mate bit), would have been enough for me to tell him in no uncertain terms where he could go. That is the most insulting, hurtful thing my mate could ever manage to throw at my face. I don’t respect his wife at all after seeing that and watching how she is taking him back… and she has three boys, way to go. Let’s teach the boys that cheating is okay… will be interesting to see how those boys treat their wives when they grow up.

I don’t think people were all that surprised that he was having an affair. When I heard that he was AWOL, that was the first thing that popped into my head. I think what surprised people was the idiotic way he went about it. It’s pretty dumb to think that you can just disappear and no one will notice or ask questions when you hold such a high office. Another man ruins his career and family by thinking with the wrong head.

I like his wife. I thought she was hilarious. She basically hung him out to dry. She knew about this affair for months.
So when everyone was asking where he was she just sat back and said, “Gee, I have no idea.” Then he and his people get busted out for all the lies they had been telling. That was classic!
I think it was because she was pissed that he had the nerve to spend Father’s Day weekend away from the kids with his little mistress. Or maybe she was just tired of it all.
Who knows? I am a bit disappointed that she is sticking with him but she probably has a nice little agreement going on and doesn’t want to give that up. Clearly, there is little to no love between them. Only the kids and the public eye.

His wife is supposed to be smarter than he is…so why she doesn’t just dump his ass is beyond me.
She can’t say its for the kids — they already know that their dad is an asshole who’d rather spend father’s day with his mistress than his kids. The BEST thing she can do for her kids is divorce their dad and prove she’s not a Hilary Clinton like doormat who tolerates a cheating husband.

The ‘soul mate’ thing and the ‘I’m trying to fall back in love with my wife’. Those are such low blows on his part.
Did he honestly believe comments like that would help him secure the public’s forgiveness and understanding?
This has had to be so crushing and hurtful to his wife. I don’t understand how she can she can even stand to look at the jerk after that, let alone stay with him.

I know they all do it no matter what party or affiliation. There are too many idiot politicians not to know that many many many are scamming their way through every relationship and promise they have ever made.
It’s just that when the ever so pious bible thumping Repubs do it. Well, you get the all out hypocrisy of sleaze ball on a stick X10.

I agree with Dee, the wife is “standing by her husband” in order to metaphorically knife him in the gut when the time is right. And who could blame her? That “trying to fall back in love with my wife” line was too insulting for words. She’s a smart lady and will totally make him pay some way, some how. That’s the lesson she’ll be teaching her sons. Screw around and you will suffer at some point.

I hope that is the case. I’m not too sure. Religion may play a big part her staying with her husband. Many churches in the South teach divorce is abhorrent to God (Cause God evidently turns a blind eye to lying and cheating). I believe the Sanford’s minister is one of those “God Hates Divorce” kind of ministers based on some of his comments.

Hey, it’s not always about money. Maybe she’s hanging on to make sure her sons have access to political connections. Those are invaluable in those circles. You just never know…

I agree that it’s political, but I don’t think it’s for her children. She had to call in a LOT of political favors to keep him from getting ousted to begin with.
Sanford has a clique of equally clueless overprivileged political friends that plan on running next term. Among them the current Atty. General (who insists that no laws were broken or at least ethics violation when the gov. left the State with no Executive leadership). Sanford and co don’t want the Lt. Gov. to take Gov. position before election because based on SC politics, he’d easily be re-elected.
I’m not going to get on the SC political corruption. This is the state that had the cokehead treasurer.
At least the Sanfords go on vacation tomorrow so we don’t have to deal with his “I’m sorry(2009)” tour any longer.

I’m NEVER surprised when a Family Values Republican gets caught in a sex scandal. They only support “family values” in order to make society hold their own skeleton-filled closet shut for them.
Churches in the south teach God Hates Divorce because it is right there in the Bible, lots of times, some of it from Jesus himself.
Another day, another GOP presidential hopeful implosion.

All WS say things like soul mate because it makes them seem romantic instead of a lying cheating assh*le…
how romantic to fly to another country and cheat on your wife with a dried up looking she/he………
Those poor boys to have an asshat for a father. I hope they take after their Mother.

I don’t know how these political wives can handle the public humiliation that their cheating husbands put them through. *shudder* It’s a bitter pill to swallow for the sake of the children, money, political power or whatever reason they do it for.
On the upside, I LOVE IT when hypocritical right wing conservatives are outed like this!

I have been learning a lot about the extramarital affairs of U. S. senators, representatives, and South Carolina Gov. Sanford on recent editions of The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC. Republican Senator John Ensign of Nevada hasn’t pretended that his married lover is his “soul mate.”
If you want to find out more about the sexual shennanigans, check out Rachel’s show’s site. I’m sure you can watch relevant videos.

“Sanford said Chapur is his soul mate but he’s trying to fall back in love with his wife.”
That bit is just disgusting beyond means. To say that in public rather than in private to his wife, well, disgusting. Because, yes, sometimes people fall out of love…but do you have to rake your wife’s heart over the coals in public for everyone to see?
And if she is taking him back purely to cement her or her childrens future political aspirations, then it’s like a Clinton redux.
WTF is wrong with people like this?

I really don’t understand why there’s such a big fuss about this. I’m not saying that he’s right exactly but isn’t it the case that there’s only a fuss because he’s a public figure : if he was a bus driver nobody would be interested in this at all.

I think the fuss is due to the hypocrisy of him staunchly preaching ‘family values’ whilst slipping it to some bird who wasn’t his wife.

The controversy is also due to the fact that he is the chief executive of a state and even his wife and staff didn’t know where he was for what, 5 days? Governor is a very high office, probably POTUS is the only American elected office that’s higher. His security detail didn’t know where he was? Then lying about it and saying he was hiking? Really dumb! At least tell someone where you are.

For most of the people I talk to that actually live here in South Carolina, the fuss is mostly not about the affair itself, but the fact that he completely disappeared for several days without leaving anyone clearly in charge. It was grossly irresponsible for someone in his position.
That and the fact that he has always been so self-righteous.
He’d already made a lot of people angry recently by trying to refuse much needed federal money because he didn’t approve of where the federal government said the money should be spent. He lost a lot of political capital when the state legislature overrode him. He’s always preaching about cutting “pork” from the state budget, but the kinds of things he likes to cut out are things like providing medicaid (health coverage through the government) to women with breast and cervical cancer. He’s such a kind and thoughtful man, you see.
