Random cranky pondering (with gratuituous and unrelated LOL cat)

Do you ever feel the urge to say, to a loved one (or a friend, or well meaning relative, acquaintance, etc.), “I don’t know where you get your information, but it doesn’t apply to my reality”?

Heh. In my family it’s a several-times-a-day event to hear someone say “I completely disagree with that!”, and we disagree and argue until we get bored and change the topic. In my husband’s family, the same statement will be greeted with three solid months of stony silence, including refusal to answer the door/phone, ignoring children/grandchildren’s birthdays, etc. Then suddenly The One who was Disagreed With reappears as if nothing has happened. And it’s most of them like that too, not just one. Very strange.
Do you know what would happen if you didn’t restrain yourself with this person? You might get lucky and end up with three months of peace! 🙂

I’ve never thought to say that until now, but I’ll certainly be bearing it in mind for a particular family member. It’s just fabulous and there’s no comeback (although she’ll think of one).

Yes, every time my mother un-glues her lips from the ass of the latest right-wing pundit du jour long enough to spew their craziness at me like it was (white christian heterosexual america-lovin’) god’s own truth.

Excellent line. I may have to take note of it and use it on occasion with some of my family members. With my health issues, I frequently get the “but you don’t look sick” line or any variant of it. Looks can be deceiving. I’m so tired of the she’s “crazy”, “lazy”, “just trying to get out of things”, and any other word or phrase along those lines as well as the looks that go with them. I’m none of the above, and I certainly don’t appreciate being treated that way by anyone, much less family. So it’s either say something and risk pissing them off or be miserable in silence. Some choices, huh?

In a word, yes.
I have one relative who used to go around predicting the end of the world was going to happen on a certain date, a date calculated by some Biblical jigsaw puzzle interpretations by a prophet whose influence she’d fallen under. She thought it was her job to warn everyone else how to behave if we wanted to be spared the wrath of God. Being she was older than me I just had to bite my tongue and smile every time she talked about it. The date passed, and of course the world didn’t end. It’s hard to resist the urge to argue with irrational convictions or conjecture, but one thing that comes out of it, once they’re proven wrong the next time they start up you can come back with, “That’s right, you’re the expert, ’cause I remember when you said so & so..” Most people, though not all, aren’t so quick to tell it like it is once it’s proven they aren’t the last word on what it is.

My sister is a 9/11 Truther.
My mother is a Premillennial Dispensationalist who adores the Left Behind series.
Your statement is relevant to my interests. And my sanity.

I have in-laws who ask me questions like: “Why hasn’t my brother divorced you yet?” (We’ve been married 31 years, about time they get used to the idea, don’t cha think?)
But confronting them with reality has zero effect. So I don’t bother. I told that sister-in-law to ask my hubby why he’s still around.
With my family, I just say, “Call me back when you feel like being normal.” And they say ok.

Oh HeatherK, I am so sorry to hear that. I am awaiting medical records myself, because I definately got the “she thinks it’s all in her head” vibe when talking to my doctor about my pain. The “you don’t look sick” argument makes me so angry!
