So me and some gal pals went to see Sex and The City 2 on Saturday. We did the whole dressing up bit, I wore a black puffy dress with yellow, red and blue edging, some black leggings (sooo pleased that leggings are back in fashion again) and some rather fabulous red shoes, with a matching DKNY blingy red handbag. I wasn’t purposely channelling an SATC character this time, but the look was probably closer to Carrie, as she has the most eclectic taste of all the ladies.

Of course I’d been hearing some pretty bad reviews of the movie from film critics, but I knew that I’d love it no matter what. And I did.

In this film, Miranda was the fun one, a refreshing change from the norm. Charlotte was a beleaguered parent, trying to cope with two kids and a nanny, Carrie was analysing the years ahead with just her and Big, and Samantha was trying to herbally circumvent the onslaught of the menopause, with some rather hilarious results.

It was a fun romp with amazing clothes, fabulous shoes, and a glam setting. And the odd shot of Samantha getting down and dirty with some good looking bloke.

If you were a Sex And The City fan before, this movie will not disappoint, however if you’re a hater/film critic who’s idea of fun is watching films about the war in Iraq, or somebody who doesn’t enjoy the more frivolous things in life, like shopping for clothes and shoes, this movie will not be your cup of tea, so do us all a favour, and avoid it like the plague.

I loved every minute of it, and Liza Minnelli’s cameo appearance as her botoxed-to -within-an-inch-of-her-life self was priceless.

What did you guys think of the movie?

  • Sorry Karen, I thought it was lame–and I am a fan of the show. But I did enjoy going out with my daughter and her friends for cocktails and the movie.

The first part wasn’t too bad. I laughed and was happy to see everyone again–although I wasn’t thrilled that they just had to marry off the two gay characters in the show because I don’t see those two men ever getting together.

Carrie, as always, drove me crazy with her neediness. The woman can never be content. She’s always looking for unachievable perfection in every relationship instead of accepting reality and the fact that the men in her life don’t exist simply to please her and fawn all over her.

But the second half of the film got worse and worse. I feel that the characters became caricatures of themselves. And the stuff in Abu Dabi with Samantha’s continued refusal to cap her wild self while in someone else’s country was actually embarrassing. Talk about your Ugly Americans. By the time they reached the market scene with the veiled women helping them out, I was cringing. It felt all wrong to me.

A clever half hour TV comedy was never meant to be turned into a 2 1/2 hour extravaganza. I have to vote two thumbs down. Another part of my trouble with it is that I thought the finale of the show was one of the most perfect story endings I’ve ever seen. There was no need for any movies at all. It was inevitable they would ruin what had come before.

Samantha in Abu Dabi? Talk about culture clash!

I haven’t seen this movie yet, but I do hope it’s better than the last. Carrie’s total freak out at the wedding put me off the character a bit. The guy was a few minutes late, and I felt her tantrum premature. Especially since she knew he’d been worried about the scope of the wedding. The media blitz. Her “me above all else” attitude made me sorry for Him, not Her.

    And back to Samantha…

Would it be true to character if she didn’t typify the Ugly American in this instance? She’d already bowed to the traditional relationship thing in the last movie with terrible results. Fresh off of that, I could see her being intolerant and insensitive to fitting into another mold. Agree with her, no…but understand what drove her actions, yes.

I’m going to see the movie this Friday with a girlfriend. I’m a SATC ‘ho so it won’t matter really how outlandish it is. I watch it for the sass, the fashion and the friendship.

Now you see, I was far happier with the second half than the first. I couldn’t wait for them to get to Abu Dhabi.

I wasn’t thrilled that they just had to marry off the two gay characters in the show because I don’t see those two men ever getting together.

Well they got together in the last show, and it made perfect sense to me that they would have a big gay wedding in this one. I think their story arc is typical of SATC, and I loved it.

I feel that the characters became caricatures of themselves.

I have to disagree again. I think the characters behaved like they behaved in the TV series. I think they were totally true to their characters, with the exception of Miranda’s lighter take on life, which was not a bad thing.

And the stuff in Abu Dabi with Samantha’s continued refusal to cap her wild self while in someone else’s country was actually embarrassing. Talk about your Ugly Americans.

I would agree with you if this was Charlotte or Carrie that you were talking about, but seeing as Samantha has always been the most un-pc one of the bunch, her actions were once again in keeping with her character. And personally (probably because I’m not an American) I didn’t find her actions embarrassibng at all, infact, I found her the most amusing character in the movie.

Her irreverence and her do-or-die attitude in my opinion is one of the reasons for the success of the show and the movies.

There was no need for any movies at all. It was inevitable they would ruin what had come before.

I loved the ending of the TV show, but if it was up to me, I’d be happy to see one SATC movie per year for the rest of my life, no matter the story line. Give me the clothes, the shoes, and the glamour, and I’m as happy as a pig in shit.

  • I just got back from seeing it (finally!) and I’m with you, Karen, I loved it. Yes it was outlandish and parts were way over the top, but the whole show was always about over the top. From the clothes to the characters.

Samantha was classic brash and fabulously abrasive Samantha, Miranda for once didn’t have a meltdown which made me actually truly like her when normally she’s my least favorite, Charlotte was endearingly NOT Miss Perfect and Carrie and Big were wonderfully Carrie and Big. I’m a happy SATC girl!

I had some worries going into it based on the previews (a major one being dear god please don’t make Carrie and Big have kids because it’s so OOC I would have had to walk out) but none of them came to fruition so yes, very pleased.

I so hope there are more!

  • I can relax and trash out with the best of them, but the criticisms I’ve heard of the cultural portrayals in the second half–I would just be too uncomfortable paying money to see it. 🙁

Hmm, I might consider watching this. I loath Carrie with a passion and the first movie put me in a homicidal mood (Big leaves Carrie at the altar and it’s all MIRANDA’S fault?! And then that stupid twit took him back instead of, for the first time in her life, learning from her mistakes??!! What the fuck?!).

From what I’ve heard this movie sounds silly and light-hearted, which would make for a mindlessly fun evening.

One of the things that annoyed me with the first movie was how, every time they bumped into each other, they screamed (squealed) as if they hadn’t seen each other for decades.

Is that happening again in this one?

  • You know, I think they could have spent 2 hours in a restaurant complaining about their husbands and children and various jobs and lovers and whatever and I still would have loved it to death.

Though there would have needed to be costume changes. Because really, a lot of it is about the clothes, right?

I can’t help myself. I love those women and I love SATC. Loved the movie because of the characters and who they are and how much they fuck up. You just have to be there to see them through it.

I disagree. I’m a fan. I grew up watching Sex & the City. I really didn’t like it. Yeah it was pretty but it was also extremely shallow. The intelligence that they showed in the show was completely lacking. And don’t even get me started on their behaviour in Abu Dhabi. I liked Samantha she was always my favourite but that went WAY too far even for her. She turned into this pathetic creature. They were all pathetic stupid creatures. The film was also WAY too long – 2 1/2 hours? Of what? A clothes show? It’s not like there was any real discernible plot. Maybe I’m too poor and too single to appreciate it. Everyone who was with me who liked it didn’t actually watch more than a few episodes of the show and they all had kids. They loved it.

Too long yes but loved seeing it w/my dd and would gladly see it again — and Number 1 too. For heaven’s sake, who could go and not know what they were getting into? I’ll tell you though, Big looks Better and Carrie looks Crumpled and a tad Crazy. Except for a few places where she looks stunningly gorgeous. She’s interesting, I can see why the show focuses on her so! Loved happy Miranda too!
