I was pleased to learn that the vile DADT legislation has been repealed at last. It’s a policy that has always baffled me. I’ve just never understood the point of it? Like someone on Twitter pointed out, why ask somebody who’s willing to die for their country to hide who they are?
What difference does the sexuality of the person who you’re fighting next to make, when the enemy is spraying bullets at you? What difference does the sexuality of the person who’s willing to give up their life for yours make in the throes of war?
In my opinion, the existence of DADT was one of the things that kept America a step behind the rest of the western world. George Bush was the other, but you guys already got rid of him.
Like I’ve already said, I never got it, but I’m glad it’s being finally kicked to the curb, even if it has taken nigh on seventeen years to get here.
Now Obama just needs to hurry up and sign the damned bill already.

Ignorance, plain and simple. There is still a high degree of homophobia and misconceptions about homosexuality in the country, add to that misguided religious leaders and you can bet that a lot of politicians wouldn’t agree to go against those beliefs, even if they don’t agree with them, because that could potentially mean losing votes. And notice that the democrats are pushing at the very last minute to pass all this because they know that if they didn’t do it now, forget about even trying during the next two years, as the idiots in this country put back the party of “NO” in control of one of the chambers. Too bad democrats didn’t show more balls BEFORE the November mid-term elections… then again, that would have gone against their standard modus operandi *sigh* I wish they were less PC and more assoholic (the only thing I like about the Republicans since they abandoned all semblance of moderation).

I was thrilled to hear that DADT had been repealed. I watched a very interesting round table discussion on DADT (on ABC) and at the end I still couldn’t work out the reasons why certain individuals didn’t want DADT repealed. Oh, they trotted out lots of reasons, they just weren’t valid. Bottom line, it’s not acceptable to discriminate based on race or gender so why would it be acceptable to discriminate based on sexual orientation? And…if sexual orientation is not an issue for those who serves in the police, fire and ambulances services, all professions that require a person to place their life in others hands, why is it a problem in the armed forces? It should never have taken as long as it has.
*gets off soapbox*

DADT was a step forward in the US. Someone just had to step forward after that and say, isn’t this the epitome of stupid?
Homosexuality has been around since the dawn of man. It’s a part of our genetics. Get over it…oh, by the way, the earth is round, too.

My boyfriend was reading a book last week called The Code Book, and I have a brain like wire mesh, so I’m not going to be able to recall names or anything, but the man who invented the machine that cracked and translated German codes was gay. Of course, he hid it all those years, but it was discovered sometime in the fifties or sixties, and he lost his job and was pretty much institutionalized for the rest of his life. Imagine if they had found that out during the war. A gay man was a major key to defeating the Nazis.
