HomeReviewsInterviewsStoreABlogsOn Writing

I actually initially posted about the topic below this post on Goodreads yesterday, and the “writer” who’s comment I copied and pasted, came along to take umbrage with me.

Arch wrote:

“Karen, I’m the one that wrote the above statement and I stand on what I have said. I’m not an author – I’m only a writer. I don’t desire to be published and if I did desire to be published, I would still write for myself and no one else. A lot of people feel they should tell a writer what they should write and not write and they are in the wrong. I don’t and will never let people move me. I write the stories that I want to tell and I’m fine with people hating my work, but yet, I haven’t written the story for them”.

Do you guys really believe that she’d be fine with people hating her work? I think not.

Anyway, this was part of my rather diplomatic response:

“I guess that’s the difference then Arch. I think as somebody who doesn’t particularly want to be published, it’s easy to say that you would only ever write the stories of your heart. I think if you relied on writing as a career, you’d end up treating it as a business rather than as a hobby.”

Arch also wrote the following:

“If people really pay attention, they can tell when stories have been written by readers and not the writers.”

I think she’s talking about authors phoning it in. I think.

She continues:

“Karen, you have started a thread about something that I have said, which you shouldn’t have done that. You don’t like what I have said here and I’m not going to back down from my stand. Even if I was seeking to be published, I wouldn’t write what people want me to write. I’m not a follower. I’m a leader. I’m a true writer. I write and I share – I don’t write and let others edit my work to fit them.”

Yep folks, this person who’s too chickenshit to attempt to get her work published is telling me that she’s a “true writer”. And she thinks she could handle people hating her work? I think not.

Here’s another interesting tidbit:

“I don’t have to take my writing further. I don’t care if people read or don’t read my stories. As I have said before, I write for myself. I write stories that I love reading and can’t find in stores or library.”

Hmmm…

Anyway, this sentence right here, made all kinds of alarm bells go off in my head:

“It’s nothing for me to write a story, print it out and snuggle up to it.”

At this point I understood that ‘Arch’ wasn’t operating on a full shilling, but there’s nothing more fascinating than crazies on the net, right?

Anyway, an actual author called Theodora posted the following:

“I think every writer has a different relationship with writing. Some people don’t need to share, some people want to use it as a means to make money. I don’t think there’s any such thing as a “true” writer.” Many people do the things they love for profit. And many people do it because they enjoy it…”

This is what Arch The True Writer wrote in response:

“I’m a true writer…Storytelling is not hard. At least not for me it isn’t.”

Seriously?

Anyway, this is what I wrote in response:

“With all due respect, I think that until you start the process of trying to get published, I don’t think you can really know how good your story-telling abilities are. Self-critique, without input from external sources is no critique at all.”

Talk about being fricking deluded.

Oh, I thought that she was published or at least trying to. Either way it doesn’t matter, her attitude is exactly what makes a bunch of people choose self-publication, and they do think that they are “real writers” and that their crap does not smell.

I am so glad I don’t go to the Goodreads boards.

I don’t know…I’m confused. Writer yet not a writer. Leader but not a follower. ‘Puts comments out there for people to comment on yet you’re not supposed to comment on them publicly. I expect she’ll be running for politics soon with that manifesto.

There was a poster named Arch who has posted on the Amazon boards for years who would always talk about how she was a writer but wrote only for herself. She seemed to think that made her an authority on many things and often argued with the other posters. If her posts were any indication, her writing probably wasn’t very intelligible. Probably the same old Arch. I haven’t seen her on Amazon in a long time, so I guess she hangs out at GR now, enlightening all and sundry with her unpublished writerly expertise.

LAMO @ Arch. She who has had NOTHING published knows that she’s a good writer??? W T F !???!

That’s like someone who only cooks/eats their own food saying they’re a good cook!

Like Karen said, unless someone, NOT RELATED TO YOU, has read your writing, ate your food, etc. can you claim to be a “good” writer/cook,etc.

    Oy!

IIRC, she used to post her stories at the RT board and they were absolutely unreadable.

Lol, why is it that worst writers always think that their work is the best thing since sliced bread?

I’m tempted to find the stories that she’s written and post them on the blog and get you guys to critique her writing…

  • JoanneF beat me to the punch. This ‘Arch’ reminds me of another ‘Arch’ who used to post on the Amazon romance forum. I was going to advise you not to bother engaging her in future, if it is the same person. Very (very) closed-minded/intractable.

  • @Vanesaa Now you know me better than that, crazies on the net practically make my day! They are just so much fun!

  • I think that was supposed to be a potshot at me because I said I write for readers. She hates me because we had it out on Amazon. She’s constantly talking about what she wants in books, but proudly boasts that she never buys retail. I pointed out it’s like me going into a new car dealership, proclaiming I never buy new cars then telling them what I want in a car. Somehow I don’t think they’d listen. She also hates erotic romance, and won’t read even a non erotic story by an author if she has previously written erotic stories. She claims to be a huge fan of IR romance, yet only makes reference to that Suzanne Brockmann book which as near as I can tell is the only IR she’s ever read. Yeah the hits keep coming. Believe it or not she’s a moderator on the GR IR board, so tread lightly or she’ll get you banned. Wonder how much longer it will be before they realize what a troll she us?

  • If she’s not reported often enough, I don’t think the powers that be in there will ever take her mod status away.

Did I mention that I am glad I never visit the GR forums? Though I am beginning to feel very tempted :>

That’s just wrong. She needs to be taken down. Reading and writing is for everyone, no matter what genre, and not just the anal who are given tinpot powers to ruin it for others. I have to go scope this chick out.

  • Lol! I was going to say something about waving a red flag in front of a bull with that warning to you…. Of course I saw you asked about where she’s posted her writing and she immediately came back on the defensive. She’s not so easily played, Karen. You have your work cut out for you. lol. (enjoy!)

This sounds like the judgemental Arch I observed over on the Amazon forum. I believe that Arch was a loud and proud virgin (nothing wrong with that, except she was equally very vocally judgey about peeps who weren’t/hadn’t saved themselves for that one true worthy love.)
