So while linking to Maya Banks’ Colters’ Woman at B&N for yesterday’s review, I noticed that they had Colters’ Wife free as a promotion. No one to waste a chance (hello, poor beleaguered budget) I clicked on it faster than blinking–only to be told that I needed to create an account with them.

Grrr….

But okay–free book, some hoops, not bad.

Account created, click and…”give us your credit card information.”

Huh?

Sorry, what?

If the book is free, what the fuck do you need that for?

Cue email to customer service. Their reply: “We provide free NOOK Books to enable our customers to test the NOOK App on their device of choice. ”

Well, fuck.

See, I am techno impaired, both by nature and inclination. If I can’t “point and shoot” then it’s useless to me.

I never download any free kindle books because I won’t download the kindle app, and now I know that I’ll never download any B&N books either.

*sigh*

Well I downloaded the Kindle & Nook apps to my laptop before I ever got my Kindle. I never had a problem. I wanted to check the formats out before buying. (and free books were a lure!) I found I prefered Amazon, despite detractors who rail against them, they sure make it simple and convenient! After my DH got me the Kindle I downloaded their app to our PC and later to our iPad. I’m still learning, but I do like the feature it syncs my place in a book across all devices. Theoretically anyway. My budget is happy with all the deals. 🙂

Regarding the credit card info, that is BS, B&N needs it for their proprietary DRM system. As a side note, it’s worth figuring out how to take care of the DRM, but I’ll leave it at that. I am of the school of thought that if I pay full price for an ebook, the ebook is MY property to do with it as I may (of course, I don’t “share” my ebooks).

  • You can download it at ARe, which also has an HTML version so you don’t need to install another app.

  • I went looking for it at ARe (for Aztec Lady, I already own a copy) and couldn’t find it! Not the first time their search has failed me.

  • I think this is one of the greatest problems we see with promotions and even ebook purchases – too often they put in these completely unnecessary hoops to jump through that just psuh people away

  • @Willaful: I provided a link in the comment. It takes you directly to the book page. Or are you saying that link doesn’t work for you?

  • Ann, I meant that when I searched for the book at ARe (before you posted), it didn’t come up. I’ve had this issue before, having to search several different ways to find a book I know they have. It’s the first book that comes up if you search by author, but searching by title just brought up another book with the same title by a different author: http://www.allromanceebooks.com/storeSearch.html

  • @Willaful: I think it’s because you searched for Colter’s Wife (singular possessive) instead of Colters’ Wife (plural possessive).
